I own both the 4.0 (in a 2004 4Runner) and the 3.5 in my new Tacoma. I'll say that both are completely different animals and have completely different driving characteristics.

I don't find the 3.5 to be inadequate but I have the manual transmission with the more aggressive final gearing. It'll get up and haul balls if I want it to and if I baby it, I get much better city mileage. The only downfall to the more powerful final gearing is that I only get about 18.5 mpg if I'm doing 75mph. That's no worse than the 4Runner though.

My gripes are with the howling differential and a manual transmission getting stuck in gear. If they fix both of those, I won't really have any gripes about the truck or its power and ability to get up and move.

The Auto doesn't get great mileage at 70mph or faster.

Agree with you the interior and the styling of this truck is really nice but I am left unimpressed overall by the transmission and engine combo. The Transmission Software Update via TSB has helped but it will not make it a new truck in my experience now with about 500 miles on it post-TSB. I think the TSB makes the truck livable but still a "meh" experience when coming from driving the 2016 4Runner. Feel like you have to dump your foot into the pedal to get it going into the power band is not pleasurable. I thought it would improve after break-in but not the case. Fuel economy is only marginally better than previous gen Tacomas and many other full size trucks. The driveline issues with this truck are what worry me in the long term (vibrations and premature wear on the rear differential click here to view a thread on that). I wanted eventually to put some better tires and maybe a very very slight lift but there's no way I'm touching that until they get this rear driveline issue resolved. Once you go mucking with suspension and aftermarket tires the dealership will have dismissal power over your warranty claims. Sure you can cite the Magnusson Moss Warranty act but it is your word against the dealers and who wants to fuck with getting a lawyer, the time and money involved in that fight? Also there's no way I'm going to be putting suspension components, wheels and tires on/off the truck everytime I have an issue that needs to be looked at under warranty. I have been to the dealer at least once a month for the 6 months I've owned the truck. I'm very apprehensive to sell or trade the vehicle this point because I'd end up losing likely $5k to $6k. I'll probably just have to sit on it for another couple of years. In the end I may be forced back to a full size truck.... I was browsing around on the web locally today and ran across this BEAST ... very tempting. May go for a test drive this afternoon.

File a claim with corporate and cite bad customer experience at dealer. That will move em.

Funny how people think they have a V8 under this thing.

I think the common complaint is that the V6 in this truck feels under-powered for a V6 and for this application. I don't see anyone here calling for a V8... perhaps the 4.0 was the better choice to stick with for a truck application.

True but remember all of the hype around the "break-in" period and things improving over time. Yeah, that really hasn't been the case though.

There's really only so much you can tell from a 30 minute test drive. Good luck finding a dealer that will spend hours with you or let you borrow the truck overnight to test it out...particularly when it's a hot new redesigned model and they're pre-selling most of them before the tires ever hit the dealership parking lot.

Personally I don't see what the problem is. You punch this thing it sounds awesome as it revs up and moves out, period ! It surprised me.
It has the power I need and more. I don't know what people are looking for out of a 6, really.
Some people don't like the rpm's but that's the design.

It was a truck of the year finalist at motor trend.
    http://www.motortrend.com/news/toyota-tacoma-2016-motor-trend-truck-of-the-year-finalist/

Only thing they didn't like is the transmission hunting which has been fixed.

exactly. Use the rev range like its meant to be used. Its not a POS 4.0 that blows up past 4k.
