That guy probably solved your problem. I bet you remember to disengage now after seeing that picture.

Any time you drive in 4X4 in conditions where traction is good you put strain on the transfer case. It probably won't break on you suddenly, but the transfer case won't last as long as it normally would either. The weak link is the chain in the transfer case. Put under strain it begins to stretch. It eventually will be loose enough to slip on the gears. I avoid using 4X4 even on dirt roads unless really necessary. It only takes a second to switch in and out as needed.

It takes a lot less than many folks understand, but most people don't keep a truck long enough for it to be a problem for them. It is the next guy who buys your truck that will probably have to pay for it to be fixed. Years ago I owned a 1975 J-10 truck with full time 4X4. It was actually an AWD system, but with a switch to lock it into true 4X4. The system used vacuum lines to lock the transfer case. Prior to purchasing the truck some how the vacuum lines had gotten reversed. I was driving in true 4X4 on pavement even though the switch said otherwise. I tore up 2 transfer cases in a very short time before figuring out the problem. I was smart enough to know not to be in 4X4 on pavement, but not old or experienced enough to recognize the problem.

@hmsailor I wonder if there a way to put a dummy light on the dash in your sight view.

I'm really struggling to understand how hard it is to not see the current indicator. Perhaps some never look at their dash??:confused:

I would say either do the sign at the end of the driveway idea, or the shift light wired to come on with 4x4 idea, or both.

OP, if you really need 4WD on this road then use 4LO. You won't forget to take it out of 4LO.

I would tell myself before I even turned it on that I need to think of nothing else until I'm out of my driveway and then shut it off once I'm out onto the road.
Would only take like 3 times before it would become a habit.

Where you at in Florida? Have a bunch of friends in Lee county that have roads to their house that flood every year, and the drive ways never get dry, I asked them why not move, no way they love it. Only lets the riff raff in.
