so i bought a brand new 09 trd sport a few months back and when i went to change the oil there was no oil cap and oil sprayed all over under the hood! so after i changed the oil i drove down the the dealership (with a different cap on it) and asked them politely to give me an oil cap and clean under the hook and steam clean the engine. i argued with them for like 15-20 min before they finally just did it for me! first they said there had to have been one on there and i must have lost it, and there would have been more oil all over then that... what ever happened to customer service! just thought i would share how f'd up it was that a brand new truck with 5 miles on it had no oil cap..

I'd go with the TRD oil cap. It adds 14.7 hp.

    ... no oil cap?
It probably just wiggled loose and fell off. Not their fault. It was obviously there at some point, or your engine would have blown all of its oil within the first 20 miles or so and locked up.

No oil cap is unequivocably their fault. Someone at that dealership filled it up upon delivery from Toyota and then failed the Herculean task of screwing an oil cap back in. I'd be livid if this was my truck. In addition to spraying the engine bay with oil, not having that cap in place introduced an entrance for FOD (foreign object debris / foreign object damage) into your engine for the last X number of miles since it came out (assuming it was ever replaced, albeit poorly, after it was removed). Oil is a magnet for airborne dirt. The oil cap very likely could have been absent from the first day you drove it off the lot as the gravity fed wet sump would not bleed out all of it's oil through the oil filler hole, just make a huge mess as oil splattered off the rocker arms as the engine was running. I'd be interested in what the oil level was after all this time. It would not lose enough oil to overheat and seize, but it could have a reduced level leading to inadequate lubrication of your engine. (On a positive note, this is unlikely to have had a major impact on your oil level, so at least you can feel better about that). I'd go back to the dealership and ask to speak with the manager and relate how the service guys wanted to get in a p!ssing contest over cleaning an engine bay and replacing the oil cap given the serious negligence on the dealership's part that caused this whole scenario in the first place. May not accomplish much, but he at least needs to be aware of the yahoos he's got interacting with the customers. IMO some dealerships don't appreciate how your bad experience will be relayed to others via word of mouth and every once in a while they need a reality check to remind them it's the customers that keep them in business, something that is really in their best interest, especially given today's economy.

Yea I went over my truck upon delivery pretty well. They wanted to show me the interior and shit, I went for the hood latch 1st and undercarriage 2nd. Shows where my priorities are. Yes that sucks you had no oil cap. Happens quite a bit, local Lexus Dealer did that to my mother in law's Lexus with a regular oil change. Luckily I caught it when it got home minutes later. Last person to add oil (dealer?) is at fault.

Same thing happened to me with the first oil change of my brand new 2000 Dodge Durango back when I bought it. The dealership gave me the first oil change free, so at the 3000-mile mark, I took it down there. A couple of days later, I popped the hood to drop in a K&N air filter and found the oil fill cap sitting in front of the engine bay in a little nook between the radiator and hood latch - right where the brainiac at the dealership left it. I was furious. Thankfully there was a baffle inside the valve cover that prevented oil from blowing out everywhere, but who knows what had gotten sucked inside my brand new engine during the couple of days it was driven with the cap off? I called the dealership, got the service manager on the line and chewed him a new one (which he was probably used to). I told him if his shop couldn't handle a simple oil change, he'd damn sure never see my vehicle for anything else again. All he could say was "I'm sorry... you're right.". I changed the oil immediately (myself) and never had any trouble (related to THAT anyway). Never went back to that dealership for service again either.

If you want it done right, do it yourself.

Yeah its pretty messed up i asked to talk to a manager several times but they said there wasn't one there, and i was getting pretty pissed at the first guy i talked to cause he just kept insisting that there was on on it when i got it like i would take it or something. after we were arguing for a bit i told him that if there is a single thing that goes wrong with my car i would be coming straight back there to get it fixed for free because of their negligence. and yes i had opened the hood but only one time to put new headlights in so i wasn't even thinking about a missing oil cap.

I drove with no oil cap for 300 miles and off-roader without it, not on purpose of course, and I barely sprayed any oil. No check engine lights. No loss of power.

Andddddd a 7 yo thread is awakened.

BTW, oil caps have nothing to do with CELs or power. As you've now experientially proven.

Hahaha I was telling someone how I had no oil cap for 2 days and he showed me this thread. I only lost a few splashes. Not even enough to notice.

And I do. That was the problem lol, I did an oil change Friday night. Checked my oil again Saturday morning and was in such a rush to meet the guys to go wheeling that I somehow forgot it at the gas station.
