I just Called 4Wheel Parts and found out that 17" wheels work best for a 3" lift.

I don't mind going bigger, but I'm getting conflicting info from different sources. Ideally, I only want to put a 16" wheel with about 4.25 backspacing. I'm working with a 3" spacer lift on the front. What do you guys think?

 

I was starting to think that as I hung up the phone. I figured I'd turn to you guys for some direction.

I asked around the same question...I didn't much of a clear answer so I ended up ordering the Wheeler's Offroad Custom Tacoma Black Steel Wheels with 4" backspacing....At least this way I KNOW they will fit

 

4wheelparts is just trying to cover themselves in case you buy a 16" from them and then they dont fit. the 2nd gen tacomas have a little larger of a brake caliper which causes some 16" rims to rub. one advantage to running a 16" is that tire prices are much better.(once you add the price of all 4 together you wind up saving maybe 1-200 which in my mind is good). so if you see some 16s you like find a place that has em and will let you test fit em to check for clearance.

 

I'm running a 3 inch spacer lift from Toyteclifts with 16's and i haven't ran across any problems. From my understaning a 6 inch suspension lift would require bigger wheels.

 

I think the second mistake was using spacers for 3"

 

17" wheels rub too. TRUST ME, mine did... that's why I'm running 5mm spacers.

 

Wow I'm suprised wheeler's told you they wouldnt fit...I specifically asked if their steel wheels would fit and they guaranteed they would fit...thats the only reason I bought them...otherwise I would have taken a chance on a much better looking wheel

I consider them the McDonalds of lift shops.
Even if they don't completely screw you, you still know you could of done better immediately after having any interaction with them.

I had on 05 pre-runner that I couldn't get the dealer to do the rear TSB on, so I had 4WP put on an AALs and some Billys and they totally treated me like the mall crawler dude lifting his non American made, non 4WD truck.
They screwed up 2 times and then tried to over charge me...

I'll be renting a spring compressor when I do my '09

 

I previously ran the Revtek lift and now the Bilstein lift with 16 with no problems. First I had the AR-767's and they rubbed, with my new wheels they dont.

 

I know nothing about lifts.

So what happens when lifted that requires you to use a larger wheel diameter?

I can understand having to monkey with control arms, brake lines, etc.., but not the wheels. Except for looks.

The rim size matters in regard to caliper clearance. From there, it's a matter of backspacing to avoid having the rubber wheel make contact with the UCA, etc.
