ABS on this truck is dangerous...

Gonna take mine in next week to be looked at.

 

i had to do a wheel bearing on my truck and i found that the abs sensor is in that same area so i just took it out because i hate abs. now i just need to get the annoying light off my dash so i can pass inspection lol
but i feel alot more comfortable driving in the winter without abs.
i can go down my slippery drive way and stop w/o abs. but when i try it with a vehicle that has abs i slide right into the road.

 

I have not even noticed my ABS kicking in while stopping quickly in snow and ice. No problems to report so far and lately I've been driving on nasty roads everyday for about 3 weeks.

 

What kind of tires are you running? I'm trying to figure out if my over sensitive ABS is due to the Dunflops.

 

It's not. I've moved on to General Grabbers, and I get the same results.

 

Interestingly enough, I don't usually have a problem with the ABS on quick stops in snow and ice. It's slow, controlled stops that are eventually probably going to lead to a wreck.

I've had it happen several times. I'm coming to a nice, slow, controlled stop. Suddenly ABS decides to kick in, takes away 90% of my braking power, and I coast forward out of control.

 

Is it possible that when in 4x4 the ABS acts differently?
I am having no trouble with ABS in the snow / packed snow today.
I tend to notice the issue in 2wd.

 

Don't know. I was in 2WD every time I had an issue.

Ok.... Let me ask you this.... WHY aren't you using 4WD in the snow?

And - have you tried driving in 4WD while in the same conditions? How does the ABS act while in 4WD?

 

You are correct; it does but to have the rear locked I have to be in 4LO. With the transfer case in 4LO I can't travel faster than 20mph. When I'm traveling offroad in 4HI is when I would like to have ABS disabled. Because I'm traveling faster I need more distance to stop, and with ABS I require even MORE distance than usual to stop. It's annoying that is all.

 

1. "Quick stops" as in applying the brake with haste, perhaps in a reactionary manner, rather than coming to a slow, controlled, and planned out stop.

2. I haven't been in 4WD in those occasions because it wasn't necessary. Just because there's a little snow in a parking lot doesn't mean I go to 4WD. The road I was pulling onto was clear. The other incident I cited happened on a clean, dry road. It just had that one short patch of ice, couldn't have been more than 12 inches long front to back, and only on one side of the lane.

3. I don't use 4WD on a regular basis. I don't know how/if it reacts differently while in 4WD. For that matter, my real complaint about the ABS isn't always a repeatable issue. Conditions have to be right. If I go out and slam on the brakes while cruising down the snow-covered driveway, ABS will not necessarily engage.

 

abs blows. i went through 2 intersections in the snow.how can i shut it off?

 

my abs is really sensative it kicks in when it rains.... no joke

 

Have you had the truck looked at?? ABS sensors for water intrusion? Pads, Rotors, and Discs for imperfections??
Cause if you have a non-repeatable issue then the problem is not likely the system as a whole, imho. Something about the way you were driving or the conditions you were driving in made it work the way it did.

 

You don't need ABS to be working in order to pass inspection. The ABS stopped working on my last vehicle and I thought the same thing but it passed inspection just fine. They said since not all cars have ABS, it isn't required for inspection.

 

I live in The mountains of Vermont and have had no problems yet( ABS has engaged a couple of times, usually when I was going too fast and tried to brake suddenly) I think hitting the brakes with any real pressure when snow or ice is on the road and going over 15 MPH will cause it to engage. I think People get a little spoiled with how this truck handles in normal conditions and forget snow and ice IS SNOW AND ICE!! Drive slow and carefully, slow and steady wins the race (in snowcovered roads)

 

You have a 2010 Tacoma. It seems like most people with the complaints are between 2005-2008.

Also, I have no complaints with my ABS system moving at faster speeds. Where I take issue is when it engages at very low speeds when I'm fully in control of the vehicle anyway.

 

I find this whole situation really really confusing....because maybe its how you're explaining it. You should never do quick braking (with haste) while on snow. Making quick panic-like stops in the snow is dangerous regardless of ABS or any other safety features the truck has - that's like begging for an invitation into a ditch.

Just imagine yourself in our shoes reading about all this. It sounds like everything is ass-backwards. The ABS doesn't kick in while in quick stop situations but it does work while doing controlled stops?

Again - you NEED to get to the dealership and have them drive the truck OR have a rep come with you while you show them how it reacts.

 

I'll give an example. First winter w/ this truck, so it snowed and I went to an empty parking lot to get used to it. 10mph, hit the brakes hard to see how the ABS was. In my other vehicles (explorer, durango, etc) I was able to slowly stop, or slightly skid. In this truck, however, I hit the brakes hard, the pedal didn't pump, but the engine revved up slightly, and I just started to slide, even with my foot on the brake. Just felt like they werent there, no pulsing, no steering out of it (2WD). Dry pavement, coming to a stop downhill to a traffic light. On my brakes coming to the light, and hit a pothole. Same thing. Engine revs, no brakes. Pushing hard on the pedal, and nothing. Have to get off the brakes and then get back on them again to slow down. It's strange, I'm bringin my truck in soon.

 

I have a 2010 now, but my 2005 DC Off Road 4WD had some of the same ABS issues reported here... ie, on slippery roads (wet, gravel, dirt) the pedal goes to the floor, the truck growls (makes noise), and takes longer to stop... Amazed I didn't wreck the thing. Lo4 is rarely needed, and that is also when the RR Locker can be used and ABS turns off. I wish it was off in H4 for dirt driving, where we need to 'lock' the tires to skid to a stop.

My '01 had none of the issues with ABS the '05 had. So far the 2010 has braked fine off road... no grawling noise (like a mad dog) either! Keeping my fingers crossed this one will be as perfect as my '01 Tacoma was...!!
