Here we go again... Possible drive shaft/transmission squeak (video)

So I took my truck in to the dealer on Thursday for them to check the transmission fluid levels and see if the TSB would pertain to me. Got the truck back on Friday and nothing really notated on the paperwork. Looks like they topped off the fluid and didn't do the TSB since there is no sticker under the hood.

Drove the Truck all weekend with no problems. Today I went to back into my slightly inclined driveway like I do every day and with the windows up I heard this squeak, almost a grind. My GF was standing at her car roughly 30 feet away and look towards me as if she heard the same thing. I rolled down the window, put the Truck in neutral and rolled forward and then back in reverse and sure enough, there is a squeak coming when the Truck is under a little pressure in reverse.

Sounds like it could be the drive shaft, maybe the transmission since that's the last thing they touched but I have had a rear seal leak earlier this year.

That sounds like the passenger side front body mount issue.

 

sounds like suspension extension on acceleration. maybe needs some lube or something but it doesn't sound like the driveline.

 

Not sure it's the suspension. The noise picks up the more throttle I give. Suspension is barely flexing but hey, anything is possible so it could be I personally don't think it is though but I have been wrong before.

 

Jesus. No way am I buying one of these trucks. This is just too many issues. Transmission fluid, brake failure, squeaks and rattles, transmission hunts for gears, loose u-joints, the one thread with the guy who had his engine go tits up after driving his truck on the beach. Did Toyota not factor sand into their off road truck? lol I've owned two Tacoma's but there is just too much happening with these new trucks. It's going to take them years to get sorted out. I think I'm going to go with the 4Runner.

Just seems like everyday there is a new post on this forum of another owner having a new issue. It's nuts. I have a Mustang and there are far less issues reported on the Mustang forum that I visit, and that's a vehicle that get's ragged on pretty hard so you expect some issues to be reported. It's nothing like this place. I just can't see me pulling the trigger on a 35 to 37 grand Tacoma and keep my fingers crossed that I don't get one of the myriad of issues that seem to be plaguing this current gen. It's too bad because I really love the look of the truck, especially in sand with the black wheels, but I just can justify the investment with all the issues its having.

 

It's the first of the redesigned. We all knew there was going to be some issues. 2-3 model years they should have all the kinks worked out....hopefully.

Also there are less problems reported on the Stang forums because they end up crashing them before they can experience any problems

LOL Maybe so. But prior to crashing the issues you see with Mustangs are mostly minor or cosmetic stuff. Things like spots of corrosion on the aluminum hood, power seats that fail due to cheap plastic gears, the worst is probably the AC units on the new cars that don't seem to last past a couple years. Mine kicked at 37K. But rarely if ever do you see "hey my u-joints are loose" or "hey my transmission hunts like a bird dog for a gear to stay in" or "hey my brakes completely failed to engage". I know that first year model vehicles tend to have some bugs but this latest gen Tacoma is just nuts with it. I didn't think Toyota would have this many issues on a new model.

 

Does it happen only when you initially give it gas?
Can you get the sound to cycle with constant throttle?

 

From the video it sounded to me like it was happening upon initial acceleration. Makes me wonder if it's not the u-joint issue again.

 

The armchair mechanic in me was thinking axle wrap causing the pinion u joint to object.

 

I'm with you. I believe it to be suspension related. Sounds like the axle twisting causing the leaf springs to squeak. Not the end of the world. Everybody try to remain calm.

Over 15k+ Tacoma’s sold on any given month, Shouldn’t we be hearing a LOT more problems if we had an epidemic?

Moreover, FYI, I’ve heard noise like that from road debris wrapped around the driveshaft like cables, ropes, roots, 18 wheeler tire crap, even snakes and yet the OP’s first instinct is to post here and call smitty99 by name?
Really? Most ppl first instinct would be to call the dealer or would at least look under there and then go to the shop.

My truck and thousands of others like it are made in the same assembly line, same workers, same parts and as I write now, I’m approaching 9k with not a single concern or noise or anything!
How’s that possible on coming off the same line with the same parts?

Sounds like a dry u-joint .... just sayin... did they lube the driveline for you at the dealership when you were in last?? My truck was BONE dry and I had to lube it myself even AFTER I asked them to lube it for me at the 5K "checkup".

 

Not everyone who buys a vehicle is going to join an auto enthusiast forum. I lurked the FJ forums after buying it for 3 years before my first post on there.

Truck is a company truck that gets replaced every 2 years. If it was my own personally owned truck I would do more investigating and service myself. If the truck breaks, I just take off all the stuff I put on (wheels, grill, running boards, etc) and wait for the new truck to come in. One of the nice things about working in the industry and having a company vehicle. Dont get me wrong though, I treat all my vehicles as if they were my own.

Truck was dropped off at the dealer this morning. It only happens in reverse on an incline (driveway). Does not happen on a flat surface so the vehicle needs to be under some pressure.

It could be suspension, it could be the drive line. It had to go in for its normal 15k oil change anyways. Should hopefully know by 2pm what the issue is.

I went about 11k miles without an issue. I was one of the ones like you who was posting that I didnt have any issues and all that. My first issue was a rear diff leak. Then the transmission would lag going from P to D and would also slip just while driving. Issue was supposedly fixed last Thursday and now I have this noise.


I am not a mechanic but I know my way around a vehicle but noises like this, shit if I know. It sounds mechanical, so my first instinct is to think its a moving part such as the drive shaft because it only happens when there is acceleration in reverse. Everyone claiming it to be suspension, it sure as well could be.
