I went to a toyota dealer near my house today to purchase a new battery holder for my 2005 tacoma.

Online the part number is 74404-04050 (w/o cold spec)

The guy at the parts counter told me that he had to order the 74404-04050 and it will arrive a day later.

But then when he entered my VIN into the computer it listed the other part instead 74404-04060 (w/cold spec). I don't know if he just said that to make me buy the part that he has in stock or not :(

So here's my question. Does it matter which part I get for my tacoma? Since I live in south texas (very hot!!!) would it better to get the w/o cold spec versus the w/cold spec?

I don't know if it makes any differences or not.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

You should have asked him what (w/cold spec) means. I have never heard of it.

The different part numbers are likely do to the different battery sizes. I would take the part he has in stock, check if it fits, and go from there.

It's different battery sizes. I ran into this when I needed a new battery in Dallas on my Taco purchased in North Carolina. It's been a few years, but if I recall correctly, mine came with a group 27 battery from the factory and the dealer said that all new tacos sold in Texas came with group 24.

    Thanks for all the replies.

So according to the toyota sales guy the cold spec means that the part was manufactured for northern states.

According to Toyota computer, my VIN number pulls this part up. So does that mean my taco came from a dealership somewhere up north?

It fits in my 2005 taco. So just concern of the heat here in south texas if it could cause issue to this holder if it gets too hot.

Maybe this item was not made to handle such high temperature since it was coded for cold spec?

    thoughts?

Toyota manufactures their cars differently for different parts of the country. In the northern states they often have a cold weather package which are options on the truck that make sense for the cold weather climate. As mentioned above, typically the battery is a little more robust with more CCA (Cold Cranking Amps). So the size of the battery holder is slightly larger to accommodate a slightly larger battery. It would seem to make sense that your truck was from the north if it has that option, but you are really only guessing. Calling the local dealership with the VIN should offer information as to where the selling dealer was located. So the cold spec terminology refers to the size of the part, not to the ability of the part to withstand the heat of Texas. Most likely both the cold spec and non cold spec holder is manufactured out of the exact same material.

    @ ACEKraut

Thank you. your response cleared up my concerns.

The original stock battery holder in my 2005 taco was very skinny and small compared to this new one with cold spec. Reason why I am replacing the original part is because it started to deteriorating.. maybe humidy or moisture?

Knowing that it is made from same material and it fits in my truck, I will use it :)

My original battery was 27F, so it has the larger battery tray. I now haver a 24F installed in the same original tray and the 24F sit in the tray just fine.

    On a related note...

Does anyone know if all Tacos that come with the 27F battery also come with the stronger (130A?) alternator?

I thought the tow package came with something like a 170 amp alternator and the standard one was a 130 amp. Is that right?

If memory serves me I think the regular Alternator is 90.
