First, how many people that buy these trucks go on forums? I'll bet it's a very very small percentage. Second, how many of these people that buy the trucks are "mechanically inclined". I'll bet a large number of them can't open the hood and if they can, can't tell you the components. Do they know what sounds should or shouldn't exist? Or, do they assume that since it's a new vehicle made by a good company that has to meet federal guidelines and rules that everything is AOkay? As for the press, they only get involved when there are deaths or the word "recall" is used.

Very true. A friend of mine recently asked me to look at his brand new '16 Rav4 after opening the hood and asked me, is that normal?
So I'm looking and said, is what normal? That?? I said What? Don't you see it, the idle is rough.

I had to explain to him that it looked perfectly normal to me under idle condition, as almost all new vehicles run lean to cut emissions save gas blah, blah, No problemo, you're good to go, but he was ready to take it to the stealer the next day and prob would've had a bad day and not believed them.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Not to nitpick, but the two bolded sentences directly contradict each other...

As for the noise, my first thought was something in the u-joint or axle twist on a leaf spring as somebody else said above.

    Good assessment. Buy something else.

I was pretty excited back in Aug 2015 when I ordered my truck and took delivery the following month, but the fun wore off as the problems began to surface.

I noticed you might have a lift on your truck. Has the dealership said anything about that possibly being the cause?

Love my truck, but luckily haven't had the major issues everyone seems to be reporting. Best of luck to you.

No not really. First, if I owned my truck I would get under the truck, and take a look for myself. In this case, I let the dealer handle it all. The second part of it, I treat them as if it were my own means I am not driving it like I stole it. Not romping over everything and scratching the hell out of it. Just because I'm not inspecting everything with a magnifying glass doesn't contradict anything.

No issues so far. I am waiting for the day they blame something on it though.

If you say "I am not doing x because I don't own the truck", then say "I am treating it as if I own it.", that is contradictory. I get your explanation and I agree that what you meant to say is not contradictory. But what you did say is... /hijack

Good luck figuring out the noise and let us know if the dealer says something besides "that is normal" or "it is caused by your lift job".

Your wife is wrong. You being an asshole and not having any friends is purely a coincidence and not related at all. j/k

The other side to your statement, is that on every forum, there are a few folks just looking for a chance to look smart and savvy. They will be the ones trying to take every single reported issue and make it into a model-wide recall-worthy defect. A lot of the things being reported as widespread "issues" here are extremely minor and most people would not have even noticed them had somebody not posted about it and prompted them to check for it. Others may end up being serious (u-joint lube, rear differential wear, etc) but there is nowhere near enough information out there yet to know for sure.

Just got off the phone with Toyota

"We think we have found where the noise is coming from but we are not sure. We found that part of the plate towards the front seems like it might be the cause. We have the parts on order and they will be here tomorrow. We wanted to start with that and move from there"

    :notsure:

I told them to check and lube the U joints to see if that helps in the meantime.

"We just found out that the part is back ordered and it wont be in today"

Going to pick up my truck later today while the part is on order.

Let me know what the dealer tells you. My part is still on order according to the dealer. Ever since picking it up from the dealer while the parts is on order, the noise isnt that bad and doesnt do it as much. Hopefully whatever they do fixes it.
