The value of the Associated Press college football poll has diminished in recent years, but this is one AP ranking that will excite Ohio State fans.

The organization has ranked the Buckeyes the No. 1 all-time program over the 80 years in which the media poll has released rankings.

Ohio State had a total of 1,112 points, 67 more than second-place Oklahoma. The historical ranking is based on total poll appearances, number of times as the No. 1 team and AP national championships.

Ohio State has been ranked No. 1 105 weeks and has been in the rankings 852 times – both best in the country – and has won five Associated Press national titles.

Notre Dame, Alabama and Southern California rounded out the top 5. Nebraska was sixth and Michigan seventh. Other Big Ten teams were Penn State (12th), Michigan State (19th), Wisconsin (24th) and Iowa (25th).

The Buckeyes’ best decade was the 1970s, in which they appeared in 92.6 percent of AP’s polls. Their worst decade was the 1940s when they were ranked only 55.7 percent of the time.

In only three seasons have the Buckeyes have failed to be ranked at least once.

“Ohio State has had a run of consistent, high-level play like no other in college football,” AP national college football writer Ralph Russo said. “Most great programs have had a period here or there when they’ve slipped off.”

For many years, the Associated Press poll was the gold standard of polls. Its importance slipped during the Bowl Championship Series era when AP polls were not factored into the computer formulation of bowl selections. That remains the case with the College Football Playoff.

 

I just read that^ the list was pretty accurate in my opinion.

That's cool and I realize that winning the AP National Title isn't the ONLY measure... But Alabama has two AP national championship trophies for each of tOSU's, not to mention more than any other school in the country...

so whatever. Cool I guess.
