Are Step Sides obsolete now?

I was looking at all the tacomas, now and before, it's only the 1st gens that have a step side and even at that, it's a very few amount. No one like them anymore? less demand? less useful?

 

I don't think any of the manufacturers have one. I guess Ford was the last one with the 08 F150s.

The previous generation Tundra could be had with one. I traded in a 2000 Silverado Short Bed Sport Side 4x4 for my Tacoma. I would love to put a stepside bed on my truck.

 

Never liked them I am glad they got rid of them. If I ever need one I'll use my tire.

 

I'm not sure how good they would look on a 2nd gen Tacoma, but I think they didn't look good on the old Tundra's.
However I think they look good on other trucks, like GM 1500 pick-ups.
I think the lack of demand and orders is probably why car companies have stopped offering them as a option.

 

I think it was the design that made them that way, if you look, the Tundra has small steps, basically not worth putting on in the mold, with the 1500, they took out the back steps, it's just rounded out.

I'm still a fan of step sides, wish I could have gotten a 97 taco step side instead of the 07 I have.

 

sliders = better (and essentially provide the same function)

 

I think they look retarded, and serve no purpose. Tire is there, great step. Get some sliders and they're way more useful.

Also the previous Tundra looks so so horrible. Was looking at one today at a light... god aweful ugly.

 

i have a 03 taco with a step side bed the looks of it is what gets me looking just diff an i love it i get asked all the time about it an people like it too an u dont see very many of them around here. The dealer went to east coast miami. to get mine. becasue no one had a 4x4 v6 with a 5 speed with the step side bed. i know have 67,xxx miles on it an hope to have it till the wheels falls off.
i love the looks of the bed. but thats just me
and i dont think a step side bed would look good on the 2nd gen taco's tho o well

 

I just took mine off tonight and think the truck looks much better without them. Now, I just have to find something to do with them...

those step side tundras look like complete ass btw. if i was going to have a stepside, it would be a late 70's early 80's GMC.

 

I see by your build that you are calling your running boards step sides. You should list them on Craig's list for a couple hundred dollars and someone else will be happy to buy them and put them on his truck. Hell, someone on this board might want to buy them.

I like the retro look of a stepside. It used to be that all pickup trucks were stepsides. You can put less cargo in a truck with a step side bed, but with those dinky little five foot beds that the double cabs use, it is not more than a trunk anyway.
