Man this shit is so intimidating trying to start talking myself into bulking.

    For you seasoned vets,

Should I just go to maintenance and keep my cardio as a my deficit ( 30-60 min a day depending on weather. (I love cycling) ) to get my body fat levels lower around 12-14%.
Or should I just go for it start bulking and what is a healthy amount of weight to put on before trying to cut again.

I don't know that there's a "recommended" amount of weight to stop at. It's honestly all about what you want. I can't wait to bulk, but we come from 2 totally different backgrounds. I was at 147 when I started my last one. I wanted to hit 175 between September and May. I hit 170, loved the added mass and strength, but hated having a belly for really the first time ever. So, I quit a month early to be able to get rid of the belly before summer. It's all about what you're comfortable with, really.

That's my issue Mentally I'm not comfortable at all purposely adding on weight. I guess being so obese it scares me that once I start I'll start seeing benefits and think we'll if I gain 20lbs and increased my lifts by 50 lbs each that means if I keep adding in the weight I'll add even more to my lifts and never come back down

First off Certs/looks. It's gonna be diff for everyone. I have a brother in law who bought a new house that is not live able due to renovations for at least the next three - 6 months. His wife and two kids are staying with us. You'd think he'd be inside renovating and moving things along, nope, he's doing yard work to give it curb appeal. He's be the type to go for a trainer who looks like the guy he would want to be. Funny thing is he's a trainer and very materialistic. Then you have people who are functional over looks, they may look into Certs. I workout at one of the last true gyms in the area. Professional body builders, past Olympic athletes, nfl players. All the nfl guys have the same trainer, 5'10 175 pound maybe. But he's doing something right. The owner of the gym has trained more professional bb and power lifters then we could count and while he doesn't have a cert he's 70 years old and has more applied experience then a cert will ever give you. Both in workouts and diets.

As for the steroid deal, you don't get big and tight by taking them, you still have to put the work in. It just takes you last what your genetics will allow.

See I'm the opposite. I'd rather be heavy and stocky, not fat but thick, compared to 18-190 and cut up. I just feel stronger bigger

That's why I said we come from different backgrounds. If you don't feel comfortable putting on weight, don't. Maintain where you are for a while, work like a MFer, get stronger and put on muscle at the weight you're at.

I'm with @dwalden2 I think you just need to maintain and workout hard as fuck for a month or so, then re-evaluate, you're so focused on the word "bulk" that I think you're forgetting that you can build muscle cleanly and without putting on additional weight other than the muscle. Take me for example, I was so fucking dead set on being 190lbs and strong. Well here I am 6 months later and I'm back to the weight I started at, down 14 pounds from May. But guess what? I'm stronger than ever and look better than ever and that's all that matters.

Coming off a knee surgery right now, was in awesome shape my entire life and tore my ACL and had surgery over the winter. Lost tons of weight and a lot of motivation and desire to work out. Went and signed up for the gym again today, this thread is motivating me right now haha. Hope to be back to all my regular sports and activities soon! Nice to meet you all!

Yep, totally possible to put on muscle (which will add weight) and get stronger without bulking.

Bulking I believe is referred to as dietary intake. Provide the basic nutrients you need for muscle development and growth and not much else, you greatly decrease the amount of unwanted weight you can put on. You don't need to get much bigger to get stronger
