Sure would like to know if they sent our "bad" differentials back to the "lab", what they uncovered when they cracked open the case on them. Bet if they truly were not bad, they will go right back on the parts shelf.

Since they told you that your diff was wearing prematurely, seems like they've already been looking into it. I'm guessing that diagnosis came from the dealership and not from Toyota?

Is the diff howling only happening on the TRDOR's?

No my sister bought a 2016 SR5 4x4 DCSB and it is happening on hers too. Hers was built in MX, back in May/June.

Yet we have dealerships telling bassman177 that it's a normal characteristic of the ORs. I guess its normal for us, but looks like your sister has a serious problem!

She's going to make note of it with dealer at her 5k service. Probably a few months down the road.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
I wonder... Are the howling trucks all double cabs? That certainly changes the weight distribution... At least to some degree.

On the SR5, I had 5100 or so, when the CPS failed, and they failed to diagnose it properly, and it broke down a 2nd time, and I got a the Sport, but that was just 720 miles ago. And that's why I say "not yet".

Mine is a double cab, and I first heard it at maybe 2000 to 2500 miles. Had it replaced at a smidge over 3000. Heard it again on the new one by 3500. Now I am at 4803. Truck is stock if you exclude cosmetics (grille, tint, ect.).

So I feel like this could happen to anyone at anytime (as far as miles are concerned)

Semi Update for you guys. The field engineer will be in town on Thursday (8/11). So I will be dropping my truck off Wednesday night, and hopefully on Thursday night or Friday I will have some info!

I appreciate the advice given here. UPDATE: I called my dealer today because I had not heard from them. They had told me the new rear end would be here earlier in the week. Well it came in and they just forgot to call me. I'm going to set up a appointment when I feel I can let the truck go for a couple of days. (Also going after the high pitched wind noise during strong crosswinds.) I will update all here when the work has been done.

I would also like advice on going after Toyota for some kind of compensation due to declined resale value due to this major repair. Should I just contact Toyota Customer Service? Start at the dealer or just go to Toyota USA (or whatever they call themselves)

It looks like this thread has finally got back on track. Here's hoping it stays focused on the issue at hand.

Keep in mind mine is a 2014 model so this is NOT limited to the '16 model year.

    Thanks.
