    Mine failed this weekend at 8500 miles. It started jerking and then died. It wouldn't restart. I was 86 miles from the nearest tow and pulling my tent trailer. It took 3 hours to get a tow truck. They had to send two because I had three passengers. Toyota care covered my truck tow but would not cover the second truck required to get my passengers. The lady on the phone said I needed to call a taxi. I'm not sure where you find a taxi in rural Montana but she didn't seem to care. I'm out $350 for towing, $200 for a last minute hotel room, and a day's wage. They changed out the CPS and said it was fixed. Half a mile from the dealership it started jerking again and the check engine light came back on. They decided the CPS failure ruined my catalytic converter and exhaust system. It seems to be running fine now but I don't trust it. I am not happy with the response from the Toyota care people. The local Montana dealership went out of their way to get us back on the road but it was a huge and expensive pain in the ass! I hope Toyota issues a recall so that others don't have to experience the same frustrations I have.

    you only loose the power assist of the brakes, not the actual brakes.

    I would say my experience was dangerous. It died on a two lane highway in the middle of nowhere. I was not able to get it completely off the road with momentum since I was going uphill and pulling a trailer. Luckily a nice farmer let us sit in the shade and brought us water while we waiting nearly 3 hours in 98 degree heat for a tow.image.jpg

    so thats like 10 counts. out of 500000 sold. dont think there will be a recall just yet, as that is normally the very last thing they will do as that just shows blame lol.
    so maybe keep a spare one ready to go :D
    for the above, do you know its sensor or just guessing?

    I was pondering doing just that. However, when mine went, so did the catalytic convertor, and I remember some others said that as well. Ain't gonna carry a spare cat.

    The local dealership it was towed to was relying on the national service dept help. They said there is a "known problem" with the CPS and they are collecting data. When the truck went into limp mode after changing the CPS I was told it "must have ruined the exhaust and catalytic converter" because that "sometimes happens." It does seem to be running fine now but I don't trust it just yet.

    Too many, haven't seen this many ever on such a short span, these shouldn't be happening

    As said above lucky no one's died yet.

    Five years from now after at least half a dozen ppl have serious accidents there will be NHSA investigation, and maybe then there will there be a huge fine and recall on this.

    No use in carrying a spare if my tail is left hanging out the hwy

    GM trucks have blown brake likes for 15 years. Still no recall. Wouldn't get your hopes up

    I see floor mat type trouble for toyota on this issue. Mabey they will buy it back from me in five years if I'm not dead from getting rear-ended on the hwy.

    Damage the exhaust from a muckered up CKP? Um, no, no, and HELL NO. The dealer is just blowing smoke up your ass. That simply does not happen from an engine cutting out due to fuel and spark.

    A misfiring engine will destroy catalytic converters. I assume that's what they meant.
