2017 TRD PRO, who's waiting?

You have to look at your local market. NADA and KBB are just a guide. There is no way anyone could buy a 2015 Pro for the same price as a 2015 OR. If I remember right, someone recently listed and sold a low mileage 2015 Pro for close to 40k. The ad was listed somewhere on this site or reddit. Can anyone confirm that?

 

Of course that's why dealers have wholesale and auction sources to provide them info too

 

Agreed. I suppose a dealer would not be willing to pay the premium for a Pro but I'm sure you could get it selling private party.

 

Hopefully I didn't miss any previous discussion regarding this, but does anybody have any thoughts regarding resell value of the auto vs manual? I'm in Canada so perhaps its a bit different here but I feel like the average Joe would be looking for an Auto in the used market. Not sure if the rare manual would be worth near as much as an auto or if it would be difficult to sell because most people would prefer an auto.

I've been allocated a TRD Pro manual in Cement btw. Chose the manual so I won't have to deal with hunting but I'd be lying if I said I don't yearn for the smart key and push button start of the auto.

 

I agree that NADA, KBB, Edmunds, etc. are just guides, but that's all I have to go on since I'm not in the car business. However, the numbers that I presented earlier agree with what I'm seeing on Autotrader in my area for used Tacoma TRD Pros and Off Roads. I live in TX, and there is a certified 2015 Tacoma TRD Pro with leather, 33K miles, very clean selling for $31,660 at Toyota of San Marcos. The Off Roads with comparable or less miles are going for the same. Regardless, no one knows how the 2017 Pro will do on resale comparatively. I agree with the previous post in that the best way to get the highest price for a Pro is to sell to the truck to a Tacoma enthusiast versus trading it on to the dealer.

 

I say get what you want. The Pro will hold a premium selling private party and you're better off doing that anyway. You should be able to get most if not all of the premium back.

 

If resale is something you're concerned about you're certainly narrowing the market down to only 10-20% of potential buyers if you have a manual. These are pickup trucks, they aren't sports cars and they're a chore to drive in manual. Back when I was a broke college kid the only thing I could afford at the time was a used '97 SR5 manual. An auto would have been a luxury in that truck. Then later on I found a nice '98 TRD 4x4 in manual but with the higher center of gravity and larger tires the rear wheels would get squirrelly on me sometimes on asphalt in the rain. I currently own an '02 Prerunner auto that I've had zero issues with. If I have a hankering for rowing gears I just drive my '15 STi which is a sports car with a proper manual transmission with a powerful engine to match it, not some dogged truck motor.

Got my Cement AT reserved @ $500 under whatever MSRP is upon arrival. This will be my 4th Toyota. (2 Tacoma's and 1 FJ). I'm pretty stoked.

 

Our Cement 17 TRD Pro 6MT, is also $500 under MSRP. Same dealer we bought our 16 TRD OR from. Will be trading that in per our agreement.

 

I'll be getting my Cement auto for $250 under MSRP because of basically zero communication from the dealership about my truck for six months and the sales manager agreeing to give me a little discount. No $5000 markup has been indicated on the truck and I was told there wouldn't be one either so that's good.

I think resale value is a concern to most regardless of how soon we envision selling. That's why many buy a Tacoma rather than a domestic. Few will drive their vehicle until it dies so eventually it'll come up. If I'm buying off the lot (which isn't something I'd ever thought I'd do) I'd like to minimize the money out the window.

I hear you on the car, I've got a sports car myself that I enjoy rowing. But I really do just enjoy driving stick and would normally prefer to. I have a hard time believing the Tacoma's MT is that objectionable when many seem to prefer it. Are those guys perhaps just more off-road inclined drivers? I feel like a AT constantly kicking down to 5th gear wouldn't be enjoyable either.

I agree that the market for a MT would certainly be significantly smaller. But how would that affect value? Less cause not many people want them or similar to more because the guys that want an MT really want an MT and are hunting for it?

 

This was a great post...at least for me. I've been up in the air...I always prefer manual, but wasn't sure about it on this truck. I think I'm going with auto because I want push-button start and "crawl control." I doubt I'll ever need to use crawl control, but it is really cool. That and push-button start are cool enough to soften the blow of automatic. I am still concerned about the comments about the indecisive transmission that dissapoints many people here. But then again, doesn't take much to draw a complaint here.

 

Stan23 you are are absolutely correct. Toyota of San Marcos has it labeled incorrectly. However, I found several more that are definitely 2015 DC TRD Pros in the same price range (just one example below). I'm not trying to sway anyone one way or the other. I'm trying trying to present what I found to the forum so that others have one more piece of information to consider while making the best decision for themselves. Hopefully, it helps someone. I really want a Pro, and I personally feel it's a great value if someone plans on keeping it for at least 3-4 years. Unfortunately, I don't feel it makes sense for me, since I tend to flip vehicles within 1-3 years.
