The first gens have a wasted spark setup, so its kind of a hybrid between COP and distributor with wires- minus the distributor. There are three spark plug wires and I recommend changing them. I actually ran into an issue around 15-20K into a set of wires that caused the truck to have a horrible missfire, almost not gimpable back home- and this is with Denso wires (don't go cheap).

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
I am finally back home and just had my first day of a new job! Now to sort through 1200 pictures on the Canon :bananadead:

Yeah it seems to be a case of the supercharger and also my electric cooling fans most likely, I added some Purple Ice additive to the coolant last week and it seems to have helped. Didn't overheat at all on our last outing.

Then again its only happened a few times at all so time will tell

You were at this Big Bear trip? Sucks I missed you.

Lots of variables with this stuff-- I would initially blame your electric fans- seems like a lot of aftermarket electric fan options do not flow as much air as OEM.

What is your engine management? Have any ping?

I haven't overheated that I know of, with the torque app the highest I get is ~195'ish. My auto trans can get toasty (~220) on paved mountain roads though, even though I have a huge hayden cooler installed.

Sweet. I taught at Idyllwild Arts ( ISOMATA). My grandpa built a cabin up there in 47. Let me know when you are going. I am always down for an Idy trip out.

Yeah when I took it into the service department they weren't able to replicate the overheating of course (couldn't test it out in the same 4lo scenarios I'm in), but they theorized it was the fans and the supercharger in combination. S/C is basically a heater sitting on top of the block and the fans were designed more for fast moving performance than slow moving 4lo circumstances. They recommended I look into reverting back to the stock fan clutch which I intend to do one day, just have too many other things on the list right now lol. It's not a huge issue as it's only happened a few times. Only once did I actually have to pull over and stop for a half hour to let it cool down, afterward it was back to normal the rest of the trip. The coolant additive seemed to help. They also recommended I look into an oil and trans cooler setup

No engine management, the 7th injector is also on my list. I'm upgrading my plugs to the recommended 2 steps colder ones soon (already bought them). I do get some pinging under the right circumstances if I'm pushing 5 - 6 psi, which I really don't do very often. I'm hoping when I upgrade the plugs it'll help alleviate some of the pinging which could be spark knock, if my research proves correct

Will do. Not sure what the deal will be. I think my GF wants to go but you never know!

My family built a cabin up there in the 50s. They recently tore it down and built a new house.
