How would this help? In order to keep the phone working it would need to remain charged and in order to keep people from finding it it would have to remain hidden. You may have a better plan that I'm not thinking of.

That's exactly how you'd do it, a phone will hold a charge for a couple days if it's not being used (more if it's a non-smart phone). Just keep it turned on and hidden under the seat. If your truck gets stolen, report it to the police and give them the number of said phone. They'll be able to track it's coordinates using the GPS signal.

Obviously no one is going to go out and buy an iPhone just to do this, but if you have one of those old Nokia phones from years ago it could be a safe bet to do if you're ever parked in a bad neighborhood for a few days or something. I don't know, it's just an idea.

Well I didn't just walk around the corner. Someone was banging on my front door and ringing the bell at 2am. I looked out the 2nd floor window in front to see a small crowd starting to gather. And they had a nice orange glow to them. I did the math pretty quick and sprinted to the back of the house (slicing open my shin on a table in the process, you know 2am, lights off, etc) where I managed to snap this picture of the detached (thankfully) garage.

    DSC01105.jpg

I knew immediately it was going to be a total loss, so pretty much resigned myself to that. Casually strolled outside at that point and snapped a bunch more pics. E.g. :

    DSC01106.jpg

I hung around for the inspector to show and he determined arson right away, but was awful curious about my freshly opened leg, as in if it was injured in some mad rush to leave an arson scene. As it turns out, there had been a rash of garage fires in the area, coincidentally all at the homes of us cracker "yuppies" moving into the area. I think I was making about $30k at the time. Real yuppie money.

Wow. Hopefully no one was hurt and the damage was kept to the garage/Jeep.

It's amazing what some people will do.

I'm not saying I've been there, but I did have 6 months where I worried not once about leaving my keys in my ignition, doors unlocked, windows down. :anonymous:

Sorry about the loss OP, it's safe to say every policy is different. My Mercury policy covers only what came on my truck, anything past that requires a separate rider and the premium is almost as much as my whole truck policy

All good but the gps may not work under the seat. I rooted a few old Motorola droid and had remote access to phone and made it a ip camera and had it send an email upon motion detection. Suppose if you installed a small battery and charger then had the app for tracking your kids. When it left the driveway an alarm could sound on you phone. Then you could use the find my truck app.

Sorry to hear about your truck. I hate a thief but I really hate someone that will steal another man's truck. I hope you get her back safe and sound.

First off thank you everyone for the comments and support!!!!!! I really appreciate it.

I have figured out the worst part for me now. All the parts are generic stuff you can replace. I remembered today what I can't replace... I got a new patch in the mail for my roof. I was excited and went outside to put it on my truck... Wait no truck, wait my patches...

Yes some were silly overland patches and stuff. But what hurt the most was I had 10 years of military patches I have been collecting from various assignments and people all over the world... All on my roof, all gone...

10 years of my most prized military collection gone. Some people collect coins, or plaques or whatever, I collected patches... Fuck this really sucks....

I can never replace those. They were all worn in various ways by myself or friends or co-workers. I can probably find replacements but none will be as special as those... One I wore overseas for two years, that one was a special one, a special forces one at that from when I spent my time with that unit. Fuck fuck fuck.

Hey Chris sorry to hear about this! Just earlier today I was praising you to another tw member and would never have thought someone would do this to you. I only hope that the truck is recovered as a total loss but you can recover what was important to you. I'd almost guarantee those things don't get touched. I can go on and on but none of it will make things any better for you. Just have to put you faith in karma I guess? Sorry again!

So does anybody actually know how easy it is to defeat the immobilizer? I know about the bypass modules for the guys installing remote start etc but that seems like it would take quite a bit of time and thus not useful for a thief. Countermeasures are only good if we know how the thieves are defeating our security.
