Forgive my ignorance, but I just found out the other day Gen 3s come with a smaller V6 3.4L engine than the Gen2. So does that mean you are getting much better mileage with the 2016s? 25 mpg no problem on the highway?

It's better yes. But by "clearly" I'm not sure how much you mean? If yiur expecting 25 mpg highway I'd stick to a different vehicle.
I'm averaging about 19 with mostly city driving.

My answer is if you want a Toyota Tacoma to squeak close to 25 mpg on the highway it needs to a Stock PreRunner

The 3rd gen Tacoma with the 3.5l Atkinson cycle engine is an awesome design in the automotive industry. They took the design from the Prius and they took the injection system from Lexus. What it does is change the timing in the valves and has longer strokes in the piston reducing wear and becoming more efficient when you only need 40hp to maintain speed on the highway. the D4-S injection system switches between port and direct injection depending if you either need the power of port injection or efficiency with the direct injection. It is new to the Tacoma but NOT NEW to Toyota. Can you achieve 25mpg? Absolutely!!!! BUT it will be going downhill.... realistically it is still a truck and the drag coefficient is horrible and will never be efficient as lets say a Prius. But it is definitely more efficient then previous Tacoma's

all you redneck guys do not get ignorant on the fact that I said the engine came from the prius! IT DID!!!! and guess what! the Prius is one of the best Automotive Designs in the world and has proven technology! just cause they look gay does not mean its a POS.

On the PA turnpike right now getting 15.3 mpg, not happy. I regret trading my 15 only thing better about this truck is the interior and added tech.

A few trucks use to get over 40 mpg back in the day. I have an old Mother Earth news magazine from the 70s with an advertisement for smaller trucks getting up to 45 mpg. Every truck made today is so huge. Must be due for folks needing to compensate for somethings small in their life. Getting better mileage in trucks should be a strict federal law. In this day and age there should be no truck getting under 20mpg coming from the makers. Who likes waste & pollution?

Your talking about the diesels from the 70's, and I agree but they already have the rules in effect and trucks are getting more efficient every year because of those laws.

Damn. I just drove from Pittsburgh to Philly and back on the TP last week. Over three tanks, I averaged 18.13 @ 80ish MPH with 265/75r16 tires.

Same I have 265/75r17 bfg c rated doing 75 mph from jersey to my dads in Pittsburgh 17.4 if you factor in tire difference. I do have my MX bike in the back might make a difference.

There are many reasons for larger size vehicles, they have to meet Strict Crash Tests, people are Obese compared to 40 years ago, and everyone wants every freakin kind of gadget under the sun that adds more weight to the vehicles. Its a small miracle the kind of MPG that modern vehicles achieve while delivering decent amounts of power and torque.
