Unbelievable Gas Mileage

28 mpg or 8.4l per 100 kms. This is the best ive seen. The trucks a 2012 2.7 4X4 with the auto trans. Im running 265/65R17 tires, LCE header, air restriction/muffler inside the fender removed, new NGK iridium plugs gapped to .039,

0W20 oil and new stock air filter. I did this on a trip on a perfectly flat road, no wind, temp was around 23C and driving very conserveitively around 90kms (55mph). Most of the time I was at 26mpg running 60mph. And yes I do know how to figure out fuel mileage.

 

I wouldn't call that "unbelievable". That really is about how it goes when you drive it right.

That's great, especially with the size of your tires and 4x4 drivetrain. I clocked 29 just one time with my 2wd 4 cylinder automatic. Similar kind of driving as yours.

 

Yeah but 55 MPH is nothing (these days) I bet if we all did that we would get incredible numbers from the steady wind pushing us along from all the cars whizzing past us.

I'm in a very rural area and this was on a two lane secondary highway with no cars whizzing past.

 

I normally get about 18 to 21 mpg on my DCSB 4.0L in 2WD. I do mostly "around town" driving. However last month, I was driving about 160 miles each way in very hilly terrain (elevation changes from 800' to 2000') towing a utility trailer with construction equipment. The first trip I averaged 12-15 mpg using regular 87 octane gas. The next trip I filled the tank with 93 octane plus one container of Lucas Octane Booster. This time, I drove the entire 320 miles on 3/4 of a tank of gas. That equates to about 20 mpg if my calculations are correct.

So if this is true, and my 4.0L loves 93 octane with a +3 boost from the Lucas, am I doing any harm to occasionally use this combination? With the price of 93 octane in my area currently at $2.39/gal., I'm thinking of running it all the time with an occasional "boost" when pulling a load.

 

19-22 mpg On 35s

 

Is this with a corrected speedometer and odometer?
If so that's better than any 2.7 I've driven. Can't make better than 20-22. Currently with 189k it has been averaging 200 miles on 10 gallons of fuel on the highway and about 160 in city for the same 10 gallons. Yes that's the norm with my truck always has been even before the lift and 245/75R16 Toyos. It's also a 5 lug.
That's why I asked if that's with corrections.

 

Nothing unbelievable about 28 mpg from a 4x4 2.7L 5-lugs can easily get into the 30-36 mpg zone. Here's a graph of mine since new. Best run was 4 tanks at 36+ in 2007, back when I could get E0 gas.

 

E0 gasoline is hard to find. Last time I found some was in west Texas and I noted an impressive 24 MPG. Haven't seen that fuel anywhere since.

Wow. I'm getting far less numbers than any of you. I've been averaging 19mpg since I started recording in Feb. Maybe I need to relook at what I'm doing wrong.

FWIW, this is on a truck with the following setup:

2004 2.7L 4 cylinder 4x4 extended cab with manual transmission and 95k miles
265/70/16 latitude tires
Changed spark plugs
Snugtop camper (200+lbs)
Lighter Aftermarket wheels at 19lbs each
K&n filter

 

If I stayed off the big highways when my truck was stock I was getting 27-30 all the time

 

I believe this. I have the 2016 with dual VVti and an LCE header. The engine lightly loaded with ethanol free gas is very efficient. On a flat road at a little less than 50 mph, it will clock 38 mpg in 5th gear (verified two directions). That is according to my calibrated Ultra Gauge. I can average 30 to 31 mpg over moderate distances (100 miles) with hyper-mileing techniques. This is on hilly, curvey, two lane rural roads (no traffic). With the a/c on, driving normally, it drops to a paltry 25 mpg. Any increase in engine load drops mpg dramatically. Bigger tires are a no-no on these trucks with a 4 cyl if you want economy. Mine is 4wd, manual transmission, 245/75 r16 tires. Stay away from good for nothing crapanol gas. I can't stand that crap!
