What have you done to your Trailer today?

Hey all, my wife and I recently purchased a Jayco 195rb baja. Of course I immediately joined the jayco forums but wasn't very impressed with community, having been spoiled here on Tacomaworld.

After being a part of this community for a short time I believe that tacoma owners are some of the most resourceful and handy people around. I wanted to create a place where all generations of Tacoma owners can post (and write up if they should choose) about the mods, upgrades and general maintenence work they have done to their travel trailers, tent campers, pop-ups, toy haulers or what ever you use for experiencing the great outdoors.

Congrats on the trailer. I'm really happy with our Jayco. Only thing I've done since purchasing in Dec 2014 was add some hooks and lights inside one of the closets. I plan to add a shelf in the closet and a gate and ladder for the upper bunk this winter but its not a huge priority since our son sleeps in a pack and play at the moment (wife is due with our second in January so next summer the oldest will be sleeping in the top bunk).

 

Awesome!! How are you going to mount the hooks? I'm still new to trailer construction so not 100 percent about to go about that. I assume there is some kind of structure and wall studs but I really don't know the dimensions and spacing. Something I need to research.

my mom said to use these so thats what were going to try in the near future.... no holes....

 

I used adhesive backed hooks so I didn't have to drill holes. Mounted it on the inside of the closet door to hang keys, hats, and other weight light stuff.

Just bought this to have in the trailer just in case of a flat tire and for lowering the manual leveling jacks....crossing fingers it will work have 30 days to test it out....

 

I'll keep my fingers crossed it works. I've been using my cordless Dewalt drill for the stabilizers. I was thinking I might soon pickup HF aluminum jack with a sled and a bed mount since my trucks mildly lifted and the trailer is so high.

I ordered 6" flipjack stand for the trailer jack. I'm finding it to be mildly annoying that I can't hitch the trailer unless I have a block of wood and it takes about 70 cranks to get the jack all the way on the baja lol. It's supposed to be here today. I'll install and post some pics today hopefully!

 

Year were going with a power jack in the future lol cause that same reason I have to put 2 -2*4 s under it lift high enough lol

 

It's just gonna get worse if I ever decide to go bigger tires. Speaking of I know your running some aftermarket suspension. What size tires are you running? I thinking 285 75 r16 with towing will be asking too much of the V6. Somebody recommended 255 85r16 for a larger tire with less impact on towing performance but it doesn't make sense to me. Overall diameter is still about the same as a 285 75 therefore affect on final dive ratio should be similar? Or is it because it's less rotational mass that is easier on the drive train? I'm in no rush to get new tires at the moment just curious. I will not be re-gearing either.

 

265/70/17 as i didn't want to regear or want super wide tires on the truck...

the 255s will be very narrow compared to the 285s if i recall correctly and since that's the case it will cause more friction that will cause less mpg, the 255s you will loose traction cause not being as wide but have less friction due to contact patch on ground...

just remember we have generations of trucks so mine isn't going to be the same but i do know that anything larger on mine and i have to get a BFH to pound on the firewall and being 33 or more i have to modify the firewall majorly where you might not have to. i have never looked into your gen of truck sry...

 

Thanks for the info. I just know we're all running high reving V6 engins and pulling about the same load. They're might be some changes generationally but figure we're not too far off.

 

Added a battery quick disconnect to the travel trailer. Cheap part and very simple install. You can see it has 2 pieces of metal isolated by a piece of plastic. When the knob is screwed in itmakes contact between the two pieces.

Lovely combo! Why does a tall guy like yourself drive a midsize truck?

 

Thank you!! I like the midsize for a few reasons. I'm not towing everyday so its a more econominal. I actually prefer the smaller cabin layout, but i do like how big the back seats in the fullsize trucks are. The handling and general drivability of the midsized is much better than a full size too IMO. My dad drives a Ram hemi and my uncle drives a Ram cummins. Both those trucks feel like oil tankers compared to the taco. Probably the biggest reason I went for the midsize is offroad capability. I know Raptor and power wagon are both very capable full size pickups but they are pretty pricey and I'm not a big fan driving full size pickups offroad. It's harder to see, generally more top heavy, more expensive to mod, and way less maneuverable. I might have considered a Jeep except they're stupid lol. They're noisy, all the air conditioning leaks out and the solid axle rides like dirt, and I definately wouldn't be able to tow our camper with a Heap er I mean jeep! I'm definately not hating on solid axle suspensions, I just don't believe it's the best choice for me. Anyways this truck is sort of the jack of all trades. It'll go pretty much anywhere and get or cabin on wheels up to the moutains.

 

So apparently the fastway flipjack did get delivered, the UPS guy just apparently thought he was hiding an Easter egg and didn't ring the door bell lol.

So anyways I threw it on real quick and took a few pics. It was a very quick and easy install.

So you can see fron the pics the tounge height when level is about 24 inches on the baja edition. That equates to a whole lot of cranking and necessitates some kind of stand or wood blocks to even get it hitched to my truck which is lifted about 2.75 inches and on stock tires.

The Fastway flip-jack adds six inches to the jack (wich means I no longer need to bring blocks of wood) and has an ingenious design that folds itself up mechanically which alleviates about 6 inches of jacking. As the flip-jack is brought up the rounded top of the flip-jack glides against a circular spacer and allows it to rotate upwards due to the slotted design in the flip-jack. I've added a couple pics of it stowed and rotating.

The flip-jack even has a built in template for drilling pilot holes in your jack. This can be seen in the second pic.

The second to last pic shows an approved method for short jacking if you are parked on uneven terrain (this does require a wood block).

I'll have to take a couple trips before I can review it but I'm pleased so far

well finally got to test the drill on the jacks and OMFG its so nice to see it move that fast up and down lol
as for the impact gun LOL holy crap its got alot of power .took off the lugnuts on my yota and trailer np at all and the trailer i think is like 130ftlbs not sure yet and the yota is 97ftlbs so im happy about it doing the job for sure.....

 

That's awesome! I need to get out the jack oem jack in your truck and make sure it will safely lift the trailer if need be. Have you by any chance tried it yet? Im hoping I don't have to buy a jack right away lol.

 

i haven't yet, i thought about stacking blocks high enough to lower the jack on the trailer and hopefully raise trailer tire off the ground enough , haven't looked into it yet though... need to as i know stock ones barely make it to the ground lol also if you don't have all ready make sure to get our self a carabiner to attach the emergency brake cable on the trailer to the loop on the hitch, dont place on the chain itself as if trailer breaks off then the brakes wont engage... just incase you haven't done so all ready of course ..

 

Copy that! I'm using a screw on D ring. From previous trailer expierences always pull that e brake and chalk your tires if your unhitching on a slope lol.
