What is everyone doing about carrying a spare key fob on long trips? With the keyless entry and ignition fob I'm worried about losing it while in the middle of nowhere and not having a spare with me. Cant lock a spare into the car since it senses a fob in the car.. Anybody use hitch safes? Im leaving on a 3 week road trip along backroads all the way from San Diego into British Columbia next week and a spare key would be nice to have just in case.

Side note. I've done a little searching but haven't found info on this. Is there any way to start the truck other than the push button? hidden away aux ignition? Wish these things had a manual ignition for a key just in case.

Why would you need an aux ignition? Even if the battery in the FOB dies, you can start the truck by putting the FOB up against the button and pushing start. It has an RFID chip in it.

Registered on the forum so I can keep an eye on this thread. The problem @cparkphoto described is the biggest inconvenience I've run into during my month of ownership so far. I do a lot of canyoneering and kayaking, and would prefer to just leave the fob secured under the vehicle somewhere instead of risking my drybag leaking in a canyon or on the lake and getting the key wet.

I'm considering the Hitch Safe route + turning off the comm signal on the fob (per the Tips and Tricks thread), but wanted to see if anyone has found a better solution.
    • "Holding the lock button on the smart key fob and pressing unlock twice disables the communication signal. Pressing the lock or unlock button will re-enable the signal. Good for washing your car near the handle and saving battery life."

I was going to say this same thing. The fob should never leave your pocket. The doors unlock, the truck starts all while the fob is tucked away in your pocket. No worries about losing it. You could get a wallet chain and hook it to your belt loop and fob if you are worried about it jumping out of your pocket.

You can put the spare key to sleep by holding the lock button while pressing the unlock button twice. It's in the owners manual.

Not to hijack @cparkphoto 's thread with my own specific situation, but "keep it in your pocket" isn't necessarily the best option, depending on your activity. Anything with submersion, or that risks it, (kayaking, surfing, tubing, canyoneering, etc.) makes me nervous to keep the key with me since there is no manual ignition to use if the key gets wet. I use a Pelican case or drybag currently, but frankly, I'd prefer to not have to worry about keeping this delicate key swaddled and dry in my pack when I'm going somewhere that it could be rendered unusable by the elements.

have you tried disabling the fob, taking out the little door key around your neck or otherwise securing it to yourself and putting the fob in the truck? I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking that disabling the fob, then opening the driver door with the little key to put the fob in the truck and manually locking the door?

This is a good suggestion. I've thought about it before, but wasn't wild about the idea of leaving the key in the cab, disabled or not. Just thinking now that the little key(?) could be used to lock the disabled fob in the glove box, though. Or is it the tailgate key for the glove box? Going to try this later.

The little key works for the glovebox. Tailgate key is for tailgate only. I'm gonna get the console vault soon, and that will give great security for a fob, wallet, etc while away from the truck.

Yes this works. I use the little key and hide the fob inside when surfing. However locking the doors with the little key and leaving the fob in the truck doesn't set the alarm as far as I can figure. Hitch safe and disabling the fob seems like a good way to go.

My issue is the same as yours. I do a lot of fly fishing, surfing, free diving, etc. none of which are Fob friendly.
