Convert to 2010 Tacoma Factory MP3 radio possible?

Hey Guys,

I currently have a 2008 Tacoma with a factory 6 disc but I wanted to change it to the 2009/2010 factory MP3 playing 6 disc unit. I got a hold of the head unit and tried to swap them but the rear plugs are different.

Is there a conversion kit out there? Do any of you guys have the wiring diagrams to both the pre-2009 and the 2009/2010 radios?

I am going this route because I really like to keep my radios stock. Just the ability to play mp3 cds would be great.

what is different? there was guy that stated he installed an 09 radio into his 08, all PNP??

I replaced my single-disc '05 non-JBL radio w/same from an '09. Plug-n-Play all the way. Plus I was able to add ASL and an AUX Jack. My guess is your connectors were different because one radio was a JBL unit and the other wasn't.

 

^ good info, thanks! what else was required to add ASL (auto sound leveling?) and an AUX Jack? reason i ask, i picked up an 09 radio that im going to offer to swap the LED and put up for sale here and i want to know all the options the 05-08 guys will have, thanks!

i agree w/ the jbl, no jbl deal...i did an LED swap for a guy that had a JBL radio, i was not able to hook it up to my truck to test, the harnesses were different. i also have an 05-08 radio and an 09 radio, and all the connections in the back look exactly the same.

Gleaned most info from FSM and a whole lota forum surfing, and when all else fails, buying specific components and tracing out the circuits myself.

Toyota is bad about "black boxing" certain components in their schematics - leaving out critical details such as the switched parallel resistors inside the AUX IN jack. Without them, it won't work!

Recently, I had to break down & pay $15 for two day access to Toyota's online service info website (TIS) to get the schematic for my current project: an '09 electro-chromatic rear view mirror w/rear camera display.

There was too much mis-information on the forums and I needed to know for sure from an indisputable source since the risk factor was relatively high due to the cost of the components. Good thing too - turns out the real thing was quite different from all the guesswork going on in the forums.

Simple answer - NO. The difference is the non-JBL radios have a built-in amp. On the other hand, the JBL units require an external amp. So, in order to use your current JBL radio, you would need to aquire the matching amp, get the schematic so you know how to connect the two, then wire the whole thing.

Personally, I would put the JBL up for sale and go shopping for a non-JBL unit or an aftermarket HU. Recently, a WTB post appeared where the OP was looking for a 09+ JBL 6-Disc OEM Radio. Here you go:
