So...Looked at a Jeep XJ today for my wife to putter around in. 200k miles. Drives nice everything works for the most part....lift gate has the normal issue with the latch. Has some rust along the bottom of all the doors and lift gate...not super bad but noticeable. Cat needs replaced and it's getting misfires on 2 and 6 as well as lean on both banks ( which is likely causing the misfires ) I offered $2000 but he's trying to get "close to $2500" which means there's some room. I don't know much about them....any thoughts?

It that the one sitting on Old Stage ?

misfires in the 4.0 a lot of times is clogged injectors, which end result leans out those cylinders and ends up burning valves (this is very common) which is the cause of the actual misfire.

Most likely the reason the cat needs replacing as well, leaned out over heated and melted cat. You won't know for sure about the miss fires without at least a compression check to determine if there is a valve issue or not.

You've already established its running lean.

A Cat can be had from Rockauto for $140ish

pulling the head on that engine is pretty straight forward, basic valve job isn't terrible cost wise, parts aren't terrible cost wise. time and labor for DIY, whats it worth to you.

    its a 16yo beater with a heater ( does the AC work ? )

If the cat is actually even bad. I see too many people jump straight to replacing cats without fixing the cause first. Things don't have an expiration date on em and go bad.

P0420 is usually pretty on spot, the post O2 is not seeing the temp change it needs to. it is possible, and it is commonly mis-diagnosed. I would check a lot of other things before just replacing the converter.

Converters DO fail and not show codes as well, when they clog or melt.

I agree, i'd go for the root cause before the symptom of bad cat.

I mentioned the cat cost as they aren't terribly expensive as most shops ( which use the same parts vendors as Rock many times ) will inflate the cost 3x-4x as folks do not generally know. ( this can be a bargaining point too when purchasing used vehicle )

An OEM cat is gonna be expensive, they have stringent mileage and time intervals they have to meet by law, aftermarket, not so much.

Also, many earlier vehicle emission maps have an algorithm built in that ignores post cat signal after XXXX hours of run time and allows them to pass OBD. the catalyst does wear and decline in efficiency over its lifetime. They still work, just not as efficiently as they once did. The biggest reason the EPA doesn't want your beater with a heater on the road after 20yrs, they just can't come out and directly say it (YET)

my code reader showed 300 (multiple random misfire), 302(cyl2 misfire), and 306(cyl6 misfire) also showed 171(lean bank 1) and 174(lean bank 2) The cat rattled at idle and if you bumped it with something it rattled inside as well. It drove fine only felt a little rough idle at a stop. The AC does work and it seems like a decent project but I think I'm gonna pass and wait for another project to come along. Thanks for the input.

I know people don't agree with me but I had a lean condition, with p0420, and after several attempts and diagnosis, the fuel pump fixed it.
