    This. If I could choose any Toyota pickup the 79 series cruiser is the one. Are they even making 79 series cruisers anymore?

    They still make the 70 series but for how much longer is unknown. In Australia they are popular but overpriced big and thirsty but the v8 diesel is awesome to drive. They are basic inside, in your terms like an old f150 and you need a kidney belt as not smooth due to there weight carrying ability. Another plus is their live front axle, which you cant get in any other 4x4.

    A lot of people like them because there is a huge issue with dual cabs in Aust. Breaking their chassis. Hilux is one of the better ones, Mitsubishi the worst. For us tow and load capacity don't mean much for this reason, the manufacturers now State " up to" not can do. Toyota have been critised for poor specs and loosing sales, but were doing the right thing. Still Hilux here is the biggest seller 4x4 and in top 5 of all cars sold

    Does this happen with your utes (trucks)?

    I moved to Thailand from the US about 4 months ago. In the US I had owned a 2006 TRD 4x4 and a 2014 TRD Sport 4x4 4dr right up to the time I left. I now on a 2016 Toyota Hilux (Revo) 4x4 4dr "G" . Here is my take FWIIW:

    I really like both trucks (I am doing a build thread on this site if you want to check it out here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hilux-revo-2016-build.443364/). Between the engine options 4.0L gas Vs 2.8L Turbo Diesel, I personally like the 2.8L turbo diesel better for host of reasons. The interior comparison has pros and cons on both so I consider that a wash. I was on the fence about exteriors but I think the Taco has a more 'Aggressive" front clip geared at the " Make it look tough" US market. But the G wide body Hilux has a much nice cleaner side profile. I like that the Hilux is all metal versus black plastic wheel extensions that fade and look like hell in no time on the Taco(Had that happen on my 2006). The HID Headlights with LED DRL's look very nice on the Hilux. I do wish it had the hood scoop but they dropped that option and extended the nose on the Hilux Revo as Toyota put the intercooler out front versus actually having it seal to the hood scoop as it did on the Vigo. Short of the engine options the suspension is the same. I bolted on my Toytec Boss kit and Chaos Fab CrMo UCA's I brought from the US with ease.

    To the comments about the folks who drove one in Mexico and Afghan. If you buy a base Taco or Hilux they are just that, base. They come with no higher end parts thus renting one you will not be driving the top truck. You get soft suspension, terrible tires, smallest engine and basic interior. I have been in a Base Taco and a Base Hilux. My point is we need to compare apples to apples. Cant compare a Base Hilux to a Taco TRD 4X4 SR5.

    I ordered my truck with the "G" option which is basically the equivalent of a TRD SR5 (or close). Its loaded. The reason I like the 2.8 L turbo diesel is the Tq and the endless tune up options to add more because with a turbo it is free power. Just turn up the boost. I am looking at a chip from Race Chip that will take the HP to about the same as the 4.0 but over 440 ft lbs of tq. That's the level 1 chip, they have a level 2 I am looking at as well which would add even more.

    Anyway I wanted to offer a real comparison to both as I have owned both. I like them both. Each has their own pro's and con's. I like owning a Toyota on either side of the world because they just work. At this point I lean that I like my Hilux just a bit more because of the Turbo Diesel motor and a few other small things.

    For 2016 4x4 DCSB SR5
    Approach = 29 degrees
    Departure = 23.5 degrees
    Breakover angle = 21 degrees
    Ground clearance = 9.4 inches

    TRD Offroad DCSB increases approach to 32 degrees.
    TRD Offroad Access Cab has a 29 degree departure angle and 24 degree break over.

    Tacoma fuel tank is 21.1 gallons.

    Thanks. Does the OR get the extra approach angle due to not having the air dam?

    I couldn't figure why that is. I assumed something like plastic trim or skid plate differences.

    Also I'm not sure why the Access Cab would be so different than the DC short bed. The two share the same frame and I'd have thought for all practical purposes would be the same in this case. Same overall length, same wheelbase. Does it ride higher? I dunno. It is about 100 lbs lighter and the weight would be biased more forward with less cab and more bed after the mid line.

    Took the numbers from the brochure:

    Payload and towing are also both better on the hilux. I believe payload is ~1200 kg (~2500lb) more than twice the Taco payload and towing is up to 7700lb. It may be ugly to some, but with better visibility over the hood, and way more capable doing truck stuff, I'd take one in a heartbeat. Some aggressive tires/lift and a bit of armor would change the appearance a lot I believe if that matters to someone.

    Looks good @JAFO I think that is a fine looking truck.

    For me the option of a diesel and the fully boxed frame are really the bottom line. I'd be happy if Toyota just did those things to the Tacoma.

    I considered the ARB front end bumper replacement but steered away from it. It was a last minute call. They look good on some but not others. I was originally going to do it to hold the winch but when we decided we could put the winch up front behind the bumper I liked it better and it was cleaner. Again as always aesthetics are always personal preference. But I agree with some bolt on's you can significantly improve the look of the Hilux and the Tacoma.

    I understand what you're saying but in this case for me it's function over form. They are what they are to protect critical systems and carry the winch so you don't have to walk back 300 miles to a trailhead. So as long as they don't look too awful bad and they fulfill their job.

    Thanks on the truck compliment 3dbdown.

    I agree with you and the other posters. The Hilux payload and towing are better. The box frame is very strong, The truck is lighter due to the lack of all the sound deadening stuff and extra's that the Tacoma's comes with. Hilux trucks here do not come with a heater and honestly in Thailand these guys really use their trucks for work and commercial applications. I mean most are have payloads that grossly exceed the limit but they do just fine. I am always amazed and what I see these guys doing with their trucks.
