I am evil. I love watching the mayhem of drivers slipping and sliding on ice. Lots of snow on the mountain , I want it in town!
News crews are skulking around at work today, usually means snow is coming (I hope).

Had mine out in the snow for the first time last weekend. Granted it was only a couple inches, but still. Got around okay with just RWD. Turned the TC off for shits and giggles and naturally it wanted to fish tail if I even THOUGHT about hitting the gas haha. NO problems in 4 wheel drive obviously. This is my first RWD and 4WD vehicle. Can't wait til we get some more significant snow to really test it out.

Yea duratracs FTW ! ran through a few inches with them on today. The braking with these tires is especially impressive !

New member here. I have a 2006 Tacoma 4x4 Off-Road Double Cab with the stock tires and it is HORRIBLE in the snow even in 4-wheel drive. I put weight in the bed of the truck too. When braking, I am always sliding. My wifes Honda Oddesey gets around better than my truck. Is it the tires?

Also, there is a button in the cab that reads "RR Diff Lock". When I press it, I have a flashing light on my dash. Is it AUTO and I am turning it off by hitting the button?

P.S. This is my first Toyota. I have always had F-150 4x4 Quad-Cabs in the past and I never had the traction issues with them that I have with this Toyota.

    Thanks,

    Frank

Only had to drive in th snow 1 time,Tacoma with dueller Revos worked like a champ. 1/2 inch of snow closes the schools around here though.LOL Last year we received about 9"inches one day, needless to say all hell broke loose. People in the ditch everywhere, wrecker driver and body shops dream come true. We are supposed to have black ice this morning, they cancelled the schools yesterday. A bunch of coonasses trying to drive in snow and ice is hillarious!!!

Having driven 3 Toyota 4x4 trucks from 87' to present, and having lived in the snowbelt during the entire stretch where we can get 2-3 inch an hour lake snows numerous times a winter, i can say with certainty that these stock Rugger Trails are not good snow tires.

Despite them wearing well so far, I will be happy when i have enough miles on them to justify replacing them. I will probably jump the gun and replace them a little earlier than necessary before another winter.

We finally got some real snow here in the Miami Valley. First time since I bought my truck. Mine's a 1st gen (98 xtra cab, 4x2). It's doing just fine. Sometimes it wants to spin a little from a dead stop and again when I hit 2nd gear but all I have to do is back off on the gas just a little and it behaves itself. Wed. night I had to park in a place where there was deep snow and the truck was facing downhill. When I backed out of the parking space it spun pretty bad in Reverse but managed to dig itself out. My wife works 3rd shift at a nursing home and I've been having to take her to work because we don't want to take her BMW out in the snow and get it all nasty. The roads are at their worst at 11pm because the plow operators in our town don't work that time of night. The parking lot at the nursing home is a real challenge. It hasn't been plowed and it's shaped like a bowl. Downhill going in and coming out with about 6 inches of snow on top of a layer of ice. I make it in and out of there with no problem at all. It probably helps a little that I shoveled my driveway and filled the bed with snow. Love my little truck.

We got about 3-4" of snow yesterday. I drive an '01 Prerunner and had no problems with about 300lbs of sandbags in the bed. I went through the snow with very few problems. I got to work and did a couple congratulatory donuts in the parking lot. Just bought it last year and this was the first time I got to drive my Toyota in the snow, not bad.

You have to come to a complete stop to turn on the rear diff. lock. thats why it was flashing. Once it's engaged it will stay lit steadily until you disengage it (also come to complete stop).

I had my first real experience this morning with my '09 2wd in the snow. I've got 2 extra steelies with some Firestone Winter-Force snows on them. Popped them on last night. With a combination of the traction control, the snow tires and 25+ years of experience I had absolutely no trouble at all.

hi tig1 calling-- my 2009 works great with or with out the 4x4,can't say much about the michelin x-ice lat. in deep snow.on snow pack or icey road they do the job but on heavy snow the truck is all over the place, even with the 4x4 at times.

Tires will make all the difference in the world. I put Duratracs on as I didn't need full winter tires. They do really well. IMO worth changing tires.

i've only really driven in the snow like once in my life...well a few times with just a lil snow...but back in 1993 we had a winter blizzard down here...there was like 24" snow drifts ans such...but i drove a rwd ford bronco 2 on the roads and did fine...i mean yeah i drove slow and did slide around a bit....turns are easy you just go slow...that's the key...and no sudden starts or stops...do everything gradually....my only fear in the snow and ice would be steep hills...what are the methods for going up and down them?....like do you try to get up speed so you can make it up a hill or do you just like go really slow and gradual in 4lo or something?....i figure going downhill you would just put it in low gear (manual) and not even use the brakes really....i dunno.. what i'm saying is i've never tried to go up a steep hill or down a steep hill in the snow and ice...maybe it's something that shouldn't even be attempted unless you have snow chains on or something...haha

My tacoma lovessss the snow. I enjoy snowy trails more so then mud and rocks, I just hate having to wash it just as often due to corrosive salts and sands on the road.
