I live in Katy Texas, a suburb of Houston, spent about a year in Saint Jon, loved it, at the refinery, congratulations on the boom things are the opposite here right now. Lived in a high rise condo when my family was there can't remember the name, before and after I roomed with a friend in a downtown 3 story walk up. Very nice place, your town.

The newer ducati (air cooled and testastretta motors) are pretty solid. My track only 749 and now my 1098 are bulletproof.

I mean no disrespect but perhaps someone could explain this to me.

What is the attraction to Harley?
-They have less technology than any other bike available
-They cost more than any other bike available
-The image that was once rebellious is now at best, cliche
-The riders seem more into wearing matching leather pants than anything else
-Most of the mamas I've seen on the back are ugly enough to make me turn gay

Again, no disrespect. I'm really curious. I don't ride, but if I did, I think I'd be more attracted to the technology of the Japanese machines.

I don't ride a Harley currently I'm a V-Max owner, but I have owned and my best friends ride Harleys..

#1 you don't ride so you wouldn't understand bikes in general or the feeling of the open road, But I will try to answer your question...
-They have less technology than any other bike available
My friends Harleys come with ABS, Computer controlled FI... seems like a good assortment of Technology, What other Technology are you talking about?
-They cost more than any other bike available
What Harley are you talking about?
-The image that was once rebellious is now at best, cliche
I don't know, My friends didn't buy into the Rebellious image, that must be your opinion..Not sure about that one...
-The riders seem more into wearing matching leather pants than anything else
Going with your train of thought, what do you think of sport bike riders with Full leathers multi-coloured?? BTW leather is the best protection in the event of a crash..What do they match leather pants with in your area Jackets maybe?? Seems about right, my riding pants connect with my Leather jacket with a zipper.. I'm not sure about your statement..
-Most of the mamas I've seen on the back are ugly enough to make me turn gay
Not even worth replying to... but, I guess you have less than desirable woman in your area???
BTW I do the required maintenance on my friends Harleys, and theirs don't leak, burn oil or require any more maintenance than my Japanese made bike! The attraction...They preform well and are a pleasure to ride, Great looking bike with loads of Torque, but then again you don't ride....

This is the replacement truck for my 97 frame rot truck. Need to get a game plan for mods!
Harley and sport bike all in one... go ahead and try to make fun of it... has just as much rear wheel HP as many imports and shreds them in the torque dept...

This dyno is before more mods... Have another motor putting out 137 and 117... with same config as my current motor... not bad for a Sportster motor:) Nothing like pulling an R1 and having them rip their helmet off and say what the $%#^ is that monster... It has a stepped header reverse megaphone exhaust on it and it sounds literally like a NASCAR...

I have both orange and carbon fiber body kits... depends on the mood I am in:)

Too bad Harley cut them off and left them for dead recently...

No disrespect taken. Your questions are common to anyone who does not hang around a community of Harley owners. There are in fact a VERY wide and diverse range of Harley owners. I'll explain a little like Canadian Max did. And, for the record, I have owned 3 bikes... a 95 CBR600, 04 Triumph Daytona 600, and now my 06 Harley Dyna Street Bob. Oh, and the Harley has not leaked a drop!

"-They have less technology than any other bike available"
I'm curious as to exactly what technology you're talking about? My Harley is more technologically advanced than many other bikes. I don't care that it can't do 180 like my last bike... that's not why I bought it. It's way more comfortable to ride, there's a massive amount of torque from the 1600cc motor, there's an Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection system, ram air cooled like street bikes, and 4-piston fixed Patented uniform expansion rotors for brakes... plus many others. Oh, and it's LOUD!!!

"-They cost more than any other bike available"
It depends on the bike here. Some 600cc and all 1000cc street bikes cost way more than the smaller Harleys. The bigger Harleys are more expensive, but the bigger the Harley, the bigger the motor... makes for more metal... making for bigger prices.

"-The image that was once rebellious is now at best, cliche"
This can be true. However, like I already stated, not everyone is out for that image. Those that are can be in their own world and not communicate with the rest of us... no big deal. I happen to ride with others my age who are just out to ride and enjoy riding. These are the same guys who rode with me when we all had street bikes. We rode then to find the curviest roads. We just graduated to the next bike, that's all. I even ride with the old-farts... those guys are my father-in-law and his old crowd... rough lookin bunch of dudes, but the nicest people in the world. They even let me ride with them when I had my Daytona600! How many street bike riders do you see riding around with a Harley tag along... not that anyone owning a Harley would want to do that. Anyway...

"-The riders seem more into wearing matching leather pants than anything else"
Come on... really?? This is usually for safety. I used to be that kid that rode around with jeans and no shirt at the beach. I'm glad I didn't crash then... would've been ugly. I normally wear jeans with a leather jacket now, but if we ride in the winter... say on toy runs for tots during Christmas... I'll put the chaps on. They really block the cold. Also, like Canadian said, what about street bike riders? You could poke at the matching helmets to the jackets... etc. I don't see anything wrong with any of it.

"-Most of the mamas I've seen on the back are ugly enough to make me turn gay"
You're probably just being funny here, but I have to change your "most of the mamas" so "some"... What crowd are you following?! Dang dude, you should see some of the hot chics that ride with us (my wife included). ;) I swear at some of these bike runs we do, especially the Vet Run we do every year to the Veteran's Hospital to honor those guys, we have some crazy hot chics show up sporting a Harley between their legs, and some of them ride their own! That's even hotter! So, keep your eyes open... they're out there.:D

Anyway, in answer to your question about what's the Harley attraction? Well, the crowd of people I've met who own Harleys has been rewarding enough. Not only have I met great new friends, but riding my Harley has been a much better experience than riding my other bikes, IMO.

Here's my well oiled (on the inside) machine... enjoy

I accept these answers. You made some valid counter points.

When I spoke of technology, I was referring to hp/liter and weight to power ratio. I admit I'm no expert, but Harley doesn't seem to even be in the same ball park on those as the crotch rockets.

When I spoke of price, I think it's important to compare low end to low end and high end to high end. Harleys cost more from all I've seen (not much).

I understand the safety of leather but does everyone need matching t-shirts, pants, boots, bumper stickers on their F-150's, etc., etc.?

I stick to my guns on the mamas though. Of course I've seen some dolls on Harleys. In general though:puke: Leather skinned hags with wind destroyed hair. The elements are hard on the fairer sex. The men too for that matter.

LOL!! I know what you mean. I sometimes see someone who wears Harley everything as they step out of their Harley edition F-150 and say "Hey buddy, you even own a Harley?" haha I don't even wear Harley gear when I ride my Harley. It's way overpriced, and there's some nicer looking, better fitting gear out there for half the price. I didn't skimp on the boots though. I bought these by Ariat... bad ass boots.

Many mamas are not so hot... I will agree. But hey, they need lovin too, and are out havin fun with the rest of us! And the hunnies that are hot... they be in my group. :D
