Yet another tires help thread

I am moving from Phoenix to Boulder CO this month, taking my 2nd Gen 2wd.

My tires need replacing as they're the OEM Duellers with 50k on them. So what is anyone's suggestions for an on-road tire that is ok in the snow. I've got the 17" OEM wheels.

How are they on the road (with no snow)? Noisy at all?

 

I don't have them but i posted the same question a month ago (I'm in your situation) and that was the overall response! Saving up for them now! about 800 for all 4

 

I found a set of newish Duellers on CL for a good deal - how do they perform in the snow? Or dare I ask?

dick cepeks FCII radials they are a lil more than the a/ts but the a/ts dont last near as long. i only got 15 to 20k out of the a/t. The FCII good in snow and mud and awsome off road!! but quiet on the road verry little tire noise

 

Get a RMA Snowflake rated A/T. Its listed on the sidewall and in the specs of the tire.

50K out of the Duelers, your roads must be smooth, 30K mine were done.

 

Highway tire that is good in snow. General Grabber HTS. All Terrain tires would be better in snow though. JMO.

 

Goodyear Duratracs, best all-terrains i have had yet. better than my old BFG ATs.

skip the BFG. goodyear duratrac are snow rated tires. I'd go with them. They also have the option of adding studs if you want.

 

I would of bought the Duras but was worried they wouldnt last very long. I know that they are tires and you have to replace them but I wanted others to drive them and then get a report for the next time I buy cause they look killer and I have no dought that they perform wonderful. I went with the Nitto Terra Grapplers and am very happy. Guys on here love BFG AT so your options are pretty wide. There are a million post on tires so Im sure you will have a bit of head spinning trying to figure it out

I'm needing tires real soon too. I think the BFG A/T are great tires and they look good. I plan on getting a set my self but don't know what size to get. I was thinking 275/65R17 but afraid of having rub issues because of the stock height. I was told 265/70R17 will be perfect and not have any issues. Does anyone have the the 275/65 on your tacoma? or does everyone recommend the 265/70's?

 

Thanks all for your advice. That other thread about the Michelins is interesting. One consideration is that I probably won't have much of a need for a truck after my change in career so I'm wondering about the sense in spending $800 as opposed to under $400 for a used set of Duellers. I know the Duellers aren't as good, but if I'm only keeping the vehicle for another year or so I'm not out the extra $400 for the better tires. I wouldn't expect tires would make much of a difference to the resale value of a car.

I know this thread's a couple of weeks old now, but I've been doing more research on tires before replacing mine. Currently have the BFG AT and considered the Duratrac. BUT...BUT while the Duratracs are snowflake rated, their siping only extends a third or so of the way down into the tread. After maybe 20K miles, they're not going to work like a snowflake rated tire on icy roads. That was the deal breaker for me. Love the looks of them, but I'm not going to spend $800+ on tires that won't handle the same on the icy roads for more than one winter.

Now for those considering the BFG AT, here's my experience with this set. I got them in October 2007. I've put on over 40K miles so far. BFG ATs begin with 16/32nds tread depth. After 40K miles, I have 6/32nds on the front and 7/32nds remaining on the rears (differences due to timing of rotations). They will easily last to 60K miles. Mixed highway, windy road, a lot of back road and off-road use. So when you divide up the cost (paid $171 per tire) by the miles they will last, they're actually a very well priced tire.

Now for the downside. I'm looking at replacing them now with that amount of tread remaining because BFG does like many tire manufacturers and seem to have made the rubber a little more stiff when it's worn down this far. While I couldn't break traction when they were new (after a couple hundred miles to wear off the slick surface from the factory) on wet surfaces, I can easily break traction now. They now squeal like the rugged fails when accelerating on tight turns (right turn out of a parking lot). The other downside in my view is the timing. I was hoping to get 3 winters out of them. Mileage-wise, I would. Except the fronts are worn down too far to get decent traction in the snow. Anti-locks are now working regularly, whereas before the anti-locks almost never came on because the traction was so good.

My solution is to replace the tires with new ones for winter and then put these back on for summer to get the rest of those 20K miles out of them. Of course, it won't hurt to get new wheels so I don't have to swap the tires on the stock rims. And it won't hurt to add that AAL and 5100's (I am driving a bouncing SR5 after all).

So am I replacing with BFG ATs again? No. I'm going to give the General Grabber AT2 a try due to the price, comments from others running them (I know, there's good reviews and bad ones too just like with the BFGs), and due to the tread patterns/siping. My goal is always to get two good winters out of the tires. I can safely say there's no chance of getting 3 on a set and still have tread deep enough where it's still safe IMO.

LUCKY!!! I was raised in Boulder, wish I could move back...

 

Just in case anyone is still interested, instead of spending $800 on tires and about $1200 on a shell that I would have needed for the colder CO weather, I sold my Taco and got a Subaru Outback. It was sad to see it go, but I wasn't up for spending $2k to bring a 2WD to snow country. BTW, the Subaru is awesome.
