Mine was at a range with my daughter. My daughter and I are at a good new range and I was using a XD40SC and she had her new XD9SC we had a young kid next to us and he was shooting a kids 22 rifle we were standing in are lanes watching him finish and all of a sudden I take a hit to my gut and I new I had taken a ricochet. I doubled over and told my daughter I was just hit and we looked on the counter in front of me there was a miss shaped 22 bullet and when I lifted my shirt I had a red mark. This is not the first time and will not be the last, use your safety gear I have seen eyes saved by them. A ricochet most of the time has little energy but does sting. ps: I did hear it before it hit me.

I had buddy of mine get hit by a ricochet from an AK round. He was standing next to the guy that shot the AK and we think the round went out 75 feet when ricochet and hit him in the forearm. Broke the skin but it didn't go any further thankfully.

When I was 12-14 or so I was shooting my pellet gun. Shot at a 4x4 post in the ground, prolly 20' away or so. Shot at it straight on, not at an angle. Hit it, then got smacked between my eyebrows with the ricochet. Good fun.

I have a friend that isn't careful with anything. A guy like him shouldn't take up reloading. I am lucky to be alive. I shot a reloaded .44 magnum round and swear it hit the dirt but with little kick. Not thinking I shot the next round and it was a pop. That's when I noticed the barrel was bulged one inch from the end. I took the Ruger black hawk apart and there was 2 rounds stuck in the barrel. He forgot to put powder in the 2 rounds and ONLY those 2 rounds. Had the 2nd round been full load I wouldn't be typing this. I NEVER shoot his reloaded rounds anymore.

Yesterday he put a colt .45 in his huge .50 cal desert eagle. It slid down the barrel and thinking it didn't have a round he racked another one. I yelled for him to stop and hand me the gun. He is not careful in keeping the proper calipers with the correct firearm. We won't even talk about him putting a .233 in my .22-250.

I came home and told my wife I'm never going shooting with him again. I'm tired of being the range boss to him and don't want to be part of someone, maybe me, dying.

I took a 180 grain .40 S&W ricochet off of a backstop at an indoor range. The distance the round traveled was 50 feet downrange and 50 feet back. It punched me right under my bottom right rib then melted to my shirt. It was without a doubt the scariest thing I have ever been through while shooting. The guy in the stall next to me was a trauma nurse and helped me out right away.

Different type of OH S#!% moment.

    # 1 son is an FFL and had just received a new Kel-Tec PMR 30 for a customer which he had at the house. I opened the case and lifted the pistol out, locked the slide back and verified the chamber was clear with no magazine in the pistol. I started looking at it and my eight year old granddaughter loudly said, "Don't point that thing at me!!!" I had allowed the muzzle to wander and she was knowledgeable enough to:

    1) Know the muzzle was not supposed to point at anybody at any time under any circumstance, and
    2) Know she was allowed (encouraged?) to call out her Papaw or anyone else that violated # 1.

I apologized to her and complimented son on how he was bringing up my granddaughter. Also paid much more attention to where the muzzle was pointing which I should have been doing in the first place.

I got two. about 40 years ago Dad and I took his WWII luger out to shoot it in the everglades and while I was shooting it, it went full auto. It has only done it that one time.

About five years ago these two punks were in the lane next to me showing off for their Girlfriends and were shooting a .45 recklessly about the time the range officer told them to stop I caught a ricochet off the light down to the floor and back up to the right side temple dropped me like a rock in my tracks. Range officer threw them out and it took me and him about 30 min for the bleeding to stop. I drove home with one big headache. (probably should have gotten stiches)That range officer has slipped me a box of bullets every time I go in there to shoot ever since that happened.

I'm lucky enough have my own outdoor "range". Only close friends, family, and well-vetted/well-recommended others are invited. I haven't been to a public range in about 20 years. Sounds like things have gotten squirrely.

This one is trivial, but it had me shaking my head at my own stupidity.

I was learning the sights on a new Glock 17 at the range last weekend and getting the gun broken in and I accidentally threw my bore sight cartridge down range with some other spent brass that had landed on the table in my lane. At least there was no meaningful damage done and I'm only out about $12 (cheap laser off Amazon).

I was at the Green Beret's compound on my first deployment to do some target practice with the M-24, M-4's and M-9's. They brought out their snub nose M-4's, M-249's and some real AK-47s, fully automatic. (Also a dragunov(sp?)<--coolest of the all!)One was a Chinese edition and a soviet edition. Both had the collapsable butt stocks, but only one had a forward grip built into the front. Both really beautiful weapons. They had confiscated these weapons over the course of their deployment and had unbelievable amounts of ammo. They asked us if we wanted to shoot them and we of course said Yeah!

So the guy hands me a FULL magazine of AK ammo, shows me how to load it slams the "safety" in the down position and says "go ahead". I do that and probably rattled off a good 15 rounds at and over the 20' burn directly in front of me. He slams the barrel straight to the ground and he's cracking up. He says" I guess you've never fired a fully automatic rifle before?" I say a terrified "no". He says well prepare now keep the barrel down and don't just hold the trigger. After that I was all good. And we shot for the next hour like some crazy buffoons.

There was a guard tower about 800 meters beyond that 20' burn we were shooting at. Thats what scared me the most. All my bullets would be flying up and over that guard towers head.

I was at a party in high school (alcohol-free and lots of adults around supervising, naturally  ) at this out-of-the-way house. Barely knew anybody there, as I'd been invited by a friend from another school district. Everybody's drinking (soda) and having a good time when a couple of meathead football players start punching holes in the drywall to show off how tough they are (as testosterone-poisoned teenagers are prone to do when drinking copious amounts of soda). The kid who lived there comes running into the room and yells at them to get the f*ck out of his house. This guy's a skinny little kid, maybe 5'6 or so and probably 110lbs soaking wet with his pockets full of bricks. Big Football Player #1 says something along the lines of "What are you going to do about it?" and Big Football Player #2 says "Let's see you make us" or the equivalent. Turns out the 110lb kid didn't have pockets full of bricks, because if he had there wouldn't have been room for the 1911 he hauled out. He drops the safety and again tells them to get out of his house. Unsurprisingly, they were more receptive the second time.

I decided it was time to find another party so I grabbed my buddy and dragged his ass out the kitchen door.

Reminds me of my grandfather who used to say "I'd have to take a pistol to his ass" whenever he would see a large fella walk by him.

While at a shooting tournament that used bowling pins as targets and using a .357 python, one of the bullets spun the bowling pin and spit the bullet back at me, hitting me in my pants.
At the same tournament, my buddy next to me using 9mm glock did the same thing to the bowling pin but the returning bullet hit him in hat, bounced off his forehead and off his brim of the hat.

Moral of the story: no more shooting at bowling pins.

Shoot solid lead (non-jacketed) bullets at bowling pins - they should deform easier, and not launch back at you .

While on active duty years ago we were doing a "familiarization fire" course with reservists from the flight deck. The only objective was hitting the water 5 times. To our surprise one of the new reservists fired off his first round, let out a little girlish squeak, and dropped one of Uncle Sam's fine Colt 1911's into the Gulf of Mexico. The GMG1 that was supervising lost his mind.

From that point on, he would not let any reservists shoot without the lanyards attached.
