The boys on Bobstheoilguy would laugh at 5K synthetic changes and say you were polluting the environment. 7.5K is fine with synthetic and 8.5 with Mobil 1 EP.

I change mine every 5k miles with synthetic oil and an OEM filter. I work at an import car service shop and we recommend that our customers not wait until 10k. I believe we recommend every 7.5k miles

    I agree...
If you really want some cheap insurance...spend $38 and get a oil analysis. I sent in a sample to Blackstone from my latest 7,800 mile oil change and they told me that a 10,000 interval would be fine for my engine. According to the lab the TBN (Total Base Additive) should be >1.0...mine was 3.2.
Plus for us with older Taco's the analysis on your engine health is invaluable.

I send a oil sample to Blackstone once a year, so about every 3 oc. They always recommend 7k between oil changes but I can't do it. I grew up changing the oil at 3k /3months and it took awhile to get comfortable with changing at 5k / 5 months.

I agree with Clearwater Bill, an oil analysis will give you an idea of the condition of your oil if you would like to see the results at 10k miles.

I know of an owner of an older Porsche 928 who sent samples of synthetic oil for analysis, and the synthetic oil was still good at 17-18 k miles. This person was also the owner of a trucking company, and quite knowledgeable.

I went 10-15k miles several times with the Tacoma, when driving the truck a lot for long distances. Same with other vehicle I drive for work. It has 288,000 miles, (2.5 L inline 6 cyl in an e39 525i) and change intervals have been mostly 12-18 k miles for oil and cartridge type filter.

The oil may still be good at 10k-15k but at that point how much carbon and other crappy is mixed in with it? That's what concerns me most.

I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris, with a real sewing machine engine in it and I average 10,000 to 15,000 between oil changes. I only use Castrol brand oil in the car and it has 285,000 miles on the car. I just changed the head gasket to see what was going on inside the engine...everything looks great and there are no unusual wear or gouging going on inside the engine...If Toyota says 10,000 is fine between oil changes I would say you are good to go.

I am well aware, but the idiot light is easy to turn off...I usually do that a couple of times before I change the oil. I will be honest, I am following the factory recommendations on the Tacoma right now as the dealer is handling all the maintenance. When that is over, I am sure I will run the Tacoma about the same...I have had over 8 Toyotas over the years and always did the same thing...never had issues with any of them...

The only reason I brought it up is because your last sentence says "Toyota says 10,000 between changes is fine".

I doubt you'll find any decent synthetic that can't handle 7500+ miles. That's kinda what they are designed for. Newer SN oils are pretty robust, and it would be unusual for an SN full syn oil to not make 7500 easily and more often than not, on well maintained engines, 10,000 would be no big deal. Heck most name brand conventional SN oils would go 7500.

I work as a service advisor for a Toyota dealership and yes, you can run the synthetic for 10k miles. Having said that, if you are in very dusty or dirty conditions, pay attention to your oil and your truck. No need to pay your dealership any more that you have to.

Yes. I did that here recently and sent my oil into Blackstone labs for testing. They told me to try going 12K miles next time because the oil was still in good condition.

You need to use a pure synthetic with good filters. If you do no reason why you shouldn't go to 10K miles OR once per year.

Nothing fancy. Mobil 1 Extended Performance with the same filter. It did pretty well, I was impressed.
