I bought a opt7 wiring harness rated for 380W which was shortsighted since I realized 5D lights are running at a higher wattage. I am looking to mount a light bar inside the bumper of my 3rd gen so my max size is limited to 31"

you guys think I should use a 31" 4d light @ 330W or a ~20" 5d light @ ~294W?

Got it. Cool. Yeah I still say 4d. It's LED.. they are going to "flood" a little bit regardless. You want as much spot from them as possible imho.

 

The 4d and 5d actually have like zero flood. Even if it says combo or flood. The 5d has a LITTLE bit more width and height to it, but not much. Expect it to be strictly a spot light. Even if it's a 50" vs a 20", you're not gonna get a huge difference in spread. More output and a bit more width, but length should not be a determining factor on spread/output. The optics are what you want to look for. 3d/4d/5d/optic-less. Then decide on the length you need.

3d is generally the most effective as they use the reflector and a lens to produce a better pattern. Like Baja designs bars. They use large reflectors and a combination of some with and without lenses.
Optic-less are generally not as efficient as those that utilize the reflector AND a lens. (with the exception of some of the large reflector single row bars, that use 10watt/15watt leds.)
4d/5d are driven by the fisheye leds (that is if you get one that has genuine osram fisheye leds) as well as the projector lenses to increase distance but no side lighting. You might get a little, but not as much as a 3d or fluted lens could distribute because of the nature of how they're designed. The leds are inset further back in the housing creating a "tunnel" type effect. 5d tries to utilize reflectors to help with side lighting, but it's still limited due to the nature of that inset "tunnel" effect and the projector lenses. So those are great for spot applications.

Also on a side note, be aware that a few members have received 5d bars that weren't actually high output as they claimed to be. They discovered that it in fact had 3watt leds instead of the 5 or 7 watt that it was supposed to have. Not a huge deal for some, because for the price they go for, you get what you are paying for and still work great. But keep that in mind and maybe test the light when you get it.
Otherwise if it is a high power bar, I'd suggest making your own harness with the proper relay and proper size wiring. I wouldn't trust generic wiring kits, even for something that it's rated to handle. If it's not an issue with the wire gauge, you'll have an issue with the other cheaper components such as the fuse holder or the relay, or the switch.

But if anything if you're in doubt, just post the products you're looking at and we'll try and give you some feedback. Couldn't tell you off hand what brands or sellers to avoid, but some members here might see that and chime in.

 

I'm saying regardless... Led bars throw out a lot of ambient light. Even a full spot bar, illuminates the sides, in front, etc.. granted to a degree.. But nonetheless.

 

Can you tell us how it held up tapping into the crash beam?

 

Not very well, loosened up and stripped threads in aluminium. I ended up using jack nuts inside hole of previous mounting location. Expanded it and used stainless bolts with lock tight to refasten the mounts and light bar. Hasn't loosened up since even after rough trails.

 

Awesome, thanks for the response. i have a 2016 and if the led bar sits on the beam then its perfect so i cant see why i wouldnt mount it direct to the beam instead of an expensive cumbersome bracket. thanks for the input, i will do the same.

So I got a wild hair to enter the 5th Dimension and got this 5D Cree LED 462W LED bar for $85 (They took my "Make me an offer")

(It did come with a significantly heavier duty wiring harness than my previous bar)

I previously had a 300W all Spot (8 degree) Ebay bar that perform flawlessly with no moisture or issue ever. Beam shot below:

Not much of a difference...In person it seems slightly whiter and a little more flood spread. I thought I would see more of a difference. Or should have I got the Osram 5D?

Well.. Its possible you were a victim of false advertising. Meaning it may not be 6watt leds and 3watt instead. Its happened on a couple occasions here with members that bought a 5d. Also why it would seem similar in output to your other bar. May not be the case. But I'd bet on it. I'm trying to look up what led's should be in there. Because you should be able to tell by looking closely through one of the reflectors. Other than that the only other way to tell for sure is to disassemble it part way and see what the boards look like. Or test the amperage draw to try and determine the actual wattage. But I'm still not sure how to do that myself. I have looked at a few different led types and can determine what type of led's are in there just by looking through the reflector. But in the end it's not a huge deal breaker. I mean you got a bar that was worth what you paid. Annoying yes, but I generally tell people to avoid the 5d bars. Youd Probly have much better luck with a 3d design. If you're considering sending it back that is. Buying one with osram MIGHT have better performance. But you run the risk of getting scammed again. If you're happy with it then fine, otherwise post up whatever else you look into in the future and we'll try and give some feedback before you purchase again.

I saw your post on the other thread about these. Wasn't gonna respond because I dont know much about them or have seen any members here with them. I think mostly jeep owners have their lights, mostly because they sell kits that include them. Might spy on those forums and see what others have said...

But to me, they look like they are a bit behind on led tech. They look very basic. As in basic "optic-less" reflectors. And for those prices, there's better options out there. They are basically there for the quick fix for jeep owners, in my eyes.
