They're just copying and pasting data from the 2016 models. Like the 2017 I saw today they are so new they didn't even have window stickers for them yet. The official document the dealer uses for reference is the internal source book.

Closer shot of window notice overlap

Any ideas how much it would cost to get a '16 re geared?? It can't be more than $1,000

Gear kits are usually $1200- $1400 then maybe $300- $500 labor

Smitty, you seem to be a pretty knowledgable guy, what do you think about this gear ratio change? I can't see it making that big of a difference to the average person... Unless you use the truck for towing a lot or are an avid off roader

Not so fast! It's not accurate, smitty is correct. Dealer just sell cars they don't care about accurate specs.

I drove one. Couldn't tell much difference think it could help low end torque a bit. Also will help a little when wheeling. It's probably a stronger beefier gear set might hold up better in long run. I think you might even see a marginal improvement in mpg on high side because it will be easier to hold 6th gear

Doesnt a bigger gear put you higher in the rpm band. Tacoma 3.5 engine is favorable in higher rpms. The 4.3 would let the engine rev quicker.

Ofcourse im basing my logic on bicycle gearing

That is correct, I think Toyota would do this because they have had so many complaints about the 3.9 gearing causing the transmission to "hunt" due to the lack of torque

If someone has access to test driving a 2017 a/t , post what rpm it is doing when in 6th gear at let's say 70mph.
Compare to a '16 and then have an idea if the ratio has in fact changed or not.... Should be doing more rpm compared to a '16 if in fact the ratio was changed to 4.3:1....that is if the a/t trans ratios have'nt changed for '17.

Its probably asking too much too measure "diff cock sizes" to compare...lol

Yes but the transmission is sensitive to software inputs too. They could have easily tweaked the shift points to offset some of the difference.

Trans software could affect this no?

Quicker off the line and keeps in the higher rpms....and such a small change wont be detrimental to current mpgs.

The 4.3 was already used in the 2.7.....why wouldnt toyota use it across the board. Easy move actually

We have 2 Toyota dealers but I work out of one of our ford, Honda and Nissan stores. So haven't heard anything. Checked tonight to see if we list a 17 online and nothing. I don't think they hit our area yet
