i just got off the phone with Icon and they suggest sending in their coilovers and shocks every 40 to 50 thousand miles for service/rebuild. This seems like a huge pain since the original shocks probably won't fit well after installing the larger tires. It's also $125.00 for each one, so $500.00 every 50k plus labor if you don't do it yourself! Do you plan doing this every 50k miles? If so, how do your plan on getting by while they are gone? I'd almost just replace the shock instead but don't know what my alternatives are. Wait for the new Bilstein made for the 3rd gen or just go with 5100s I guess.....

    Thoughts?

For that much you can run it 100k without sending it for service, save the money, and buy a new setup.
    Unless you are hardcore off-roader:D

Choose between 50k to service for $500 or run till they done......

    Run till they done :mudding:

I personally plan on running my fox's till they toast. In my opinion 50k for servicing can come by pretty quick especially if its your daily.. much rather just replace whole thing once they get bad enough to where i need to do it. I'd like to think as long as you're not bashing your truck that bad on a regular basis they should last easily past 50k...or id like to think so at least.

When it came close to time for rebuild (and a spring upgrade), I just bought new replacements. Was able to then sell the used ones for about half what I paid for the new ones. No down time; they practically swap themselves at this point. :)

I can see his ad now "Icon coilovers, only used in mall parking lots, super low miles, like mint...just some dust and dirt build up!"

Good time for the vendor reps to jump in and explain their marketing position on such a strategy...personally I like the idea of a rebuild-able shock, but the lifespan needs improvement....is this a quality issue? money savings issue, profit forecast marketing ploy or all the above?

while I like the idea of a rebuild, I think I'd just rather replace them. Less hassle of down time and sending them back!

Now I just have to decide what fits my needs! I want 2 to 3 inches of lift with good street and off road manners. Looking at 285/75/16s probably.

Yes. You should know what you're getting in to when you buy coil overs. They aren't set and forget parts, they need service and maint just like your truck does. 40-50k is when you actually use them. If you mob parking lots I think you can go a little further.. Probably 75k or so. But why take the risk? Also you can learn to rebuild your shocks for a fraction of the price and the satisfaction knowing they are done right.

This is the statement that Icon puts on page 3 of the installation instructions that comes with the product.

Holy moly! Every 15000 miles if street/dirt!! And every 1000 miles if dirt! This is getting close to a deal breaker for me I'm afraid....

Since were on the subject of shock maint. does anyone know any threads already made about shock rebuilding/maintenance? Or people on here that can rebuild shocks?

If it helps, I went more than twice the street/dirt recommended mileage and they were still performing well. I suspect they publish those recommended maintenance intervals to cover worst case scenarios. YMMV.

I just put them on my truck but I knew what I was getting into having had two-wheel FOX stuff for a long time. The attraction for me was not having to throw them away when it's worn out. Plus I can changes springs and retune as needed.

FOX is pretty conservative about the recommended intervals but if you roughly follow them things do run nice. I've let the maintenance go on my MTB forks and have had bushings wear out and ruin the stanchion tubes because of it, so since a set of their Factory forks are a grand now I'm not as casual about letting it slide.
