Called Toyota about leaf spring recall

I had take off shudder with the wheelers and don't with the recall springs. I took measurements when the truck was new, and now, with the recall springs its a full inch under that. Full disclosure...I do have a bit more bed gear weight now. My thought was the sumo springs might pop me back up to stock.

 

Yea but the shutter maybe caused by worn springs. I don't think an AAL will cause a shutter. I could be wrong, I just have this opinion because my experience is different than your's

 

On my truck it seemed to shutter proportionately to the rear lift...

Oem 3 leaf + no aal = no shutter at 0" lift
Oem 3 leaf + single aal = horrible shutter at about 3" lift
Oem 2 leaf (w/ overload removed) + wheeler 3 leaf aal = minor but acceptable shutter at about 1" lift
Recall 4 leaf only = no shutter at 1" negative lift (1" below stock)
Recall 4 leaf + sumo springs = results to be determined 8/20??

My truck has less than 8k miles so I don't think the Oem springs were significantly worn by use but they could have weakened by 6 years of gravity.

 

Damn that sucks man, maybe a rear brake proportioning valve relocation kit is needed? Could be the bakes causing it? I've hearD of you don't have it it can cause the brakes to drag and wear out sooner
You may also need a CB drop kit. Or shims

I never tried axle shims but did space the carrier brg down and that helped when I was lifted high with the single aal. I never considered the brakes for a take off shudder, but it can't hurt to observe that next.

Based on this truck, I think i've given up on the big lifted truck thing. I'm just over 1" at the front from the eibachs. That works and looks fine. Now, all I want is some rake back and to handle a reasonable load. (A lower tailgate is easier for motos/mtb anyway.) This is my first truck and never anticipated all this toyota leaf spring nonsense. Kinda embarrassing really. Its not the end of the world tho...some people have real problems.

 

Yea true that. It's only a truck and I'm sure you'll replace it once you've got your money out of it. There is a huge thread dedicated to driveline vibrations and shutters if you look it up you might find an answer. Best of luck man!

 

I have the same issue. I have a leer topper on my DCLB and I can feel my bump stops hitting over small bumps. These new leaf packs are trash. Now im waiting on a set of OME leaf packs to show up at my house

 

Anyone have 5100s in the rear with the recall springs, I will be installing them this weekend and was just curious how things were with them?

 

Yeap I've got them with 3 leaf AAL, I think they ride great and carry a load well

 

I have 5100s and I completely lost my lift. I originally had the stock 3 leaf and I added 1 leaf. I figured since the new pack is a 4 leaf pack it would be pretty much the same. NOPE! My leaves are sagged down to an opposite arch

 

This is ridiculous, why is Toyota considering this an acceptable solution? I've got 5100's with the stock 3 leaf, I removed the overload spring and replaced with a progressive AAL from All Pro. I've got 115k miles on the truck and about 4500 on the 5100's. My dealer is scheduled to do the recall tomorrow morning and will be charging me the extra labor to install my AAL. I'm having second thoughts about even going through with it after reading all the bad experiences with losing ride hight. I figure if I have 115k miles with no issues on the original 3 leaf pack why bother with the recall? Does anyone know of a replacement leaf pack that will only give me 1.5" lift? Most of what I see is 3" or more unless it's an AAL...

 

Don't know if this has been answered, but it probably has, what length U-Bolt do I need after having the recall done to replace my AAL back? Or what will I need to get it back on?

 

If you have an access cab short bed and added a leaf it might be good, but I've got a double cab long bed with a topper.

I told the dealership I wanted my AAL and hardware back from my original leaf pack. When I picked up the truck they had the old leaf springs still assembled with my hardware in the bed of my truck.(Even though they told me they needed to ship the old springs back to Toyota) I guess they were too lazy to take apart the leaf pack but that's fine with me! Maybe I can clean them up and paint them, then sell them to a local minnesotan that isn't satisfied with their new leaf pack for like $100. Any takers???

 

Well, I have a lift on the front, so now i get the bull dog squat till I put the AAL back on, but when the dealership went to put it back on the U-bolt wasn't long enough to put the AAL on the leaf pack.

 

Toyota considers this an acceptable solution because they don't care about us lifted trucks
It's a recall but a recall for a stock set up so if the truck was stock then you'd think "boy I'm sure glad I got these free leaf springs, how nice of toyota to think of my safety"

Right, but I would think if I get a true 1.5" lift from my AAL with my old stock springs I should expect the same from the recall springs with the same AAL. I'm going to be super bummed if I get the recall done and my truck sags...

 

Yea you should obtain the same amount of lift from the AAL but honestly I have the AAL and it's the first time I've had one so I can't speak from much experience

Good point. That's probably why I'm satisfied with mine (for now) because of the stock height. Seems like most Ops with a lift are not happy campers with this recall.

 

Yup! Flat as a pancake. Numerous ever time I hit an itty bitty bump. Shocks look ok. Need replacing, but shouldn't ride like this.

Pretty well decided on upgrading to 5100 with the all pro leaf pack
