Wait...last time I was here it was ultra4ish build thread and now it's a 80's yota restoration. What in the literal fuck?! Looks good! What did you use for primer and paint I need to finish taking material off my 85 and repaint it.

I thought the wheels seemed pretty good in the original white. It might go well with the white lettering on the tailgate. :notsure:

Not sure how tan or copper would look. Someone can photoshop it if they're feeling motivated. :luvya:

Not giving up on the Taco!
I stripped it down to bare metal and used etching primer. I used about 1.5 gallons of standard automotive paint with the Toyota paint code. Bought everything from Napa. I probably should've shopped around but ever since I had my first can of color matched paint mixed for my Tacoma grill surround back in 2010, Napa is just where I've gravitated towards I guess.

Tintable worked really well. Color changes very little. It was a pain trying to get it mixed thoroughly when there's basically no room in the bottle, so I used the closest thing I could find which was some aluminum TIG wire.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
I vote the white wheels. Copper rims, cu accent, and a orangish red is too monotone. The white really stands out.

The gun the kit came with seemed pretty good, actually. It gave a nice consistent texture and is a stupid simple design which made it easy to clean. I found that adding a little more hardener made it easier to mix and gave the bed liner a flatter, 'grainy' texture. Filling it to the line in the bottle seems to give it a somewhat stringy texture if that makes sense.

    Stock white wheels it is!

Another thing I love about these trucks. So many interchangeable parts across vehicles and decades. Top is from the '81s L52, bottom is from the '04s W59. I figured I could swap out the worn out parts from the '81 since I don't have the W59 anymore. The '81s shift handle itself is one piece, and the lower portion is shorter than the '04s so that can't be swapped over. However if I really wanted to, since the '04s shifter is splined and I could potentially change the height to meet the same dimensions as the '81s and weld it in place.

After cleaning them up, I'm beginning to think it would be better to attempt swapping the handles as well (based on the corrosion and damage). There was no dust boot on the '81s, and it looks like the worn seat made it sit lower, causing the pins to deform the grooved portion.

Successfully transplanted the Tacoma's shifter to the L52. Made a world of difference!

[IMG]DSC00299 by Jonathan Krajnak, on Flickr

While I had the transmission out, I wanted to find where the ball bearing came from that I found when I first bought the truck. Turned out to be from a check valve. Also found a shifter spring broken into 3 pieces.

Transmission and tcase are back in the truck!
