My Tacoma has 200,000 miles on it. I just got the transmission fluid flushed, although this problem was happening before the flush, so i'm sure that's not the culprit.

If I dont slowly roll up to a stop (very slowly) it shifts hard into neutral. It doesnt hard shift back into 1st when I take off though, unless I stop really fast and then step on the gas again immediately, it will hesitate to shift into first gear and rev up until it kicks in.

Is this a sign my transmission is going? Should I sell it before it gets any worse? I really dont want to put any more money into this truck.

So your tranny shifts into neutral without you physically doing it? Cause an auto dosent go into neutral at a stop it will always be in gear unless you shift into neutral. So im guessing it is hard shifting into 1st gear at a stop?? Just trying to clarify whats going on here...

It really seems like it is slipping into neutral, yes without me physically shifting it. It may be shifting hard back into first, but as I said, If I stop really quickly, and then step on the gas again within 2-5 seconds, it will rev up as if its in neutral, and then kick into first gear. Its odd.

Do you have any idea how expensive the job is? I doubt it's something I could do myself. I've already put 3 grand into it in repairs in the past few months.

Typical symptoms of transmission slipping. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? If the fluid level is fine, then I'd be thinking worn out clutch packs.

I'd not hazard a guess, other than 'not cheap'.

And yes, it's a job for a pro. You might be well served to find a used transmission with a decent warranty and more modest miles.

Member @gearcruncher might be able to give some clues on current pricing.

This was just happening to me on my 02. Turned out there was a crack in the dipstick tube and I was very low on fluid. Once that was replaced with new fluid and filter its driving fine again.

I agree that at low fluid issue would cause this .
It would be great to hear back from the OP to see if he checked his fluid properly

I have such a hard time checking the fluid level on this thing considering the angle of the dipstick. By the time I pull it out there is no definitive line on either side of the stick.

    Here's what I do:

Get the truck up to operating temperature.
    Shift through gears.
    Check level with engine running.

Should I wait a little while after shifting through the gears (with engine still running) and then check the level?

I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be low as I don't see a leak, and I just had my transmission fluid flushed about a month ago.

Also, does anyone know if Lucas transmission fix would help/hurt at all?
