Okay having some experience with electronically modulated ABS systems, it seems to me they manually bled the system. Any tiny air pocket will cause exactly what you described. I'd have them inspect every fitting for tightness and then pressure bleed the system. One tiny trapped air pocket in the ABS module could cause the failed braking to occur.

A properly adjusted drum should have some drag when set. Typically the wheel and tire assembly should rotate 1/2 a revolution before stopping. Drums also retain more heat than a disc so I would not forsee this as a problem. Have them check the adjuster for proper function. Typically a hard brake application in reverse will reset the drum shoe tension.

Keep us posted and take this up with Toyota Corporate if you have not done so already.
Tell them you will require a rental truck for the duration and be sure the brake system is pressure bled (machine bled).

I slammed on the brakes on a gravel patch today and activated the ABS, the pedal has the same symptoms as before i locked up the wheels.

no way im getting 1/2 a turn out of the wheels the way the e brake is set. The front wheels spin freely.

They gave me a rental truck for the past two weeks while they had it. I will get them to give me another.

I have tried contacting corporate toyota. They are not interested. They refused to answer even my most basic questions. They keep referring me to the dealership on Oahu. Since servco toyota is a separate entity (they bought license to be the sole Toyota dealer in hawaii in the 50s or 60s), they do not deal with us hawaii folks.

    None...yet!
So, possible ice/snow on tires, combined with slick smooth concrete garage floor, wheels lock and ABS releases pressure momentarily... Be interesting to drive these trucks slowly in an ice rink.

I'm thinking this is more of a "combination of events" which "exceeded design specifications and contingencies" rather than a systems failure. (I don't think the engineers said "Hey what happens if a guy is idling into his garage with snow on the tires on slick concrete and has 5 inches to spare before he hits his workbench and the ABS kicks in full blast?" So possibly an engineering failure.) Or to put it another way, I'd be very careful pulling into the garage on snowy days but pretty confident at 60 MPH.

And what happened? Did the OP sell the truck? Hit the brakes and head straight into the Grand Canyon? I'm betting he never saw the problem again. (Could be wrong though.)

Ouch. I was in Oahu recently for work. Rimpac was still ongoing when I was there.

Definitely find the sales manager and tell them to buy your truck. Hate to tell you that but if the truck can not be fixed and you don't feel safe make a complaint against Toyota there in Hawaii and then a complaint to the NHTSA and make them buy it back. No reason to risk your life.

Seems the techs and service techs have not been trained in proper diagnostics and corrective actions on the new ABS system. I don't know what your Lemon Law is in Hawaii but I would keep that option in your back pocket.

I completely understand your frustration with Toyota Corporate. That is one of 3 main reasons I refuse to but another Toyota.

ABS modulation occurs very rapidly. During one braking event it is possible to have the ABS modulate over 60 times(no idea on the Toyota system) to prevent wheel lock. I don't believe brake modulation had anything to do with this failure. A key sign is when his pedal went limp. Unless he has a leak in the system or open bleeder the only way he would get a limp pedal is still failed master cylinder or air pocket.

    Air in the brake system.

    E-brake not adjusted.

If both issues are due to the same problem, it could be the rear brake piston came out of the cylinder, leak or something....

He told me that he got into 4 new trucks today. He said that the pedals all continue to the floor. I think they are just trying to get rid of me.

The owner manual states that the minimum pedal clearance when depressed is 4.4 inches. My pedal goes to about 3/4" clearance where it hits the mechanical stop. Its getting pretty frustrating dealing with these guys.

Lemon law in hawaii qualifies as one failed fix for issues that put you at risk of injury or death. Three failed fixes for minor repairs. Im pretty sure this qualifies at putting me and other people on the road at risk. Gonna go to the dealership tomorrow with my tape measure and owners manual and debate this issue with their manager.

Jumped in another 2016 tacoma today at the dealership. Pedal went to the floor without excessive force. I guess thats just the way it is now.

I kept the truck. It has not happened since and I have a little over 10K on it now. I did a lot of testing trying to replicate the issue when we still had snow. What I did find is ABS does not activate until over 5 MPH. At 6 MPH the ABS will engage and under 5 MPH the tires will just lock up. To me this ruled out the ABS system causing the fault as I was not going that fast when it happened. How or why is still a mystery. The only explanation we came up with was an air pocket in the master that worked its way out.
