Here's a stupid question...bed extender

I'm looking to pick up a bed extender that someone had it on a Tacoma for my Tacoma.

Only thing is, the seller says it's for a 6ft bed, I've got a 5ft bed.

I can't find anything stating bed extenders are for long or short beds specifically.

Can someone please let me know.

I can tell you that it's not an ORM Toyota, theirs had rounded bends.

And +1, 5' or 6' bed is the same for the extended. You can go online and find a paper pattern that will easily allow you to remount if you bought a used one.

The current owner states she had it in her ford ranger, but said the Tacoma it came from had built in brackets...does that sound like anything some one knows of?

It looks newer...unfortunately she hasn't been able to tell me what if any logos are on it.

If it came off a tacoma, what's the chances it'll fit my 2015?

 

That looks exactly like the bed extenders for a Ford Explorer Sport Trac, I've had three Sport Trac's so I know.

 

Ahhh, that is helpful and answers why none of the tacoma one's I've Googled look like it.

Is it safe to assume it won't fit the tacoma...at least not properly?

My old f150 has this bed extender. Not sure it would fit on the Tacoma easily.

 

Just have to find the width measurement of the bracket pegs to see if it'll fit inside your bed. I bought a used Frontier extender. It's a super snug fit, but it works in my Taco 5' bed. Check to see what sort of mount it will need. Typically Tacos need something like this.

There are no built in brackets. The brackets bolt to the steel upright post just inside the tailgate. You remove the tail lights to access the nuts on the inside. There are 3 bolts per side. There's no reason that it won't work on a Tacoma as long as the width is the same. Measure the outermost knob to knob dimension on the extender that fits in the bracket, measure between the posts just inside the tailgate, subtract the thickness of the bracket probably 1/8" each, and compare.

The Sport Trac extender uses a reverse mounting setup than the Tacoma extenders do. They mount to strikers that bolt into the metal uprights like this... Phones taking awhile to upload pictures.

 

IIRC the extender that isn't angled on a short bed will hit the wheel wells, whereas the long bed provides enough room when it folds back into the bed of the truck to clear the wheel wells. (FWIW)

 

That is the Toyota OEM older version, the newer version has the angled corners in lieu of the smooth bends.

AMP makes a pretty good one as well.

 

Tacoma beds are the same from the wheelwell back, the longbed gets the extra length in front of the wheelwell.
