So, I took my Taco in for oil change, squeaky springs and perform the tsb-0044-14 (pinging issues in warm weather with hot truck.)

Well oil change went off without a hitch.

They already greased the leafs and they really did not want to spend a lot of time searching and searching so the are getting in contact with the Yota rep to see if they can get approval for new springs!!! I thought wow, how cool is that. It does have the 3+1 on it already.

Then he proceeds to tell me that while updating the ECM his updater (not sure what you call it) crashed. Just turned off during the update. After getting it back up, he was unable to even access the Taco's ECM. NOTHING worked. He tried reflashing it, the worx, but nothing.
They are now trying to locate an ECM and the only ones they found was in the cali plant. So they are having one shipped. Could be 3 to 5 days before I see my taco.

The service rep was really apologetic, arranged a rental car (I'm fine with a car) without even thinking twice. I work in the IT area, so yeah I know shit does happen and I get that. Nothing you can do.

Anyway I know everyone's always trashing on dealers reps, but these guys are going out of the way to see if they can get me some new springs as well on a truck that is just out of the toyota warranty. I don't quite understand as I bought it used as a toyota certified vehicle and was under the impression this would be covered.

Anyway, just wanted to share the story, there are good guys out there.

Not all dealers are bad, just most of them :boink::rofl:

But seriously, that is great that your dealer actually cares

Why would it take 3-5 days.... They should be overnighting the ECM and then installing it the next day. Not sure 3-5 days is a good experience that shows good customer service. In this case they messed up, so your vehicle should be top priority

Had similar thing happen to my Honda. The dealer pulled the part from a vehicle on the lot. Problem solved that day.

Are there a bunch of people having this happen?

I don't live on this forum, but his story is the first I heard of having ECM damaged during update.

    It's a computer. It happens.

Has nothing to do with the 'code' being applied, and everything to do with the process. Lose power midst up an update, depending on where you are, bye bye.

I totally agree w/you. I was questioning @02Duck saying this is why he is hesitant to get a TSB done. To me it seems remarkably rare, I have not read any other stories of ECM destruction during TSB's, let alone so many I would not have one done.

I work in the "Industry" and sorry to say :( BUT all OEM's are having a hard time keeping up with Flashes and frying parts...We have some units FRY before they can be delivered  and "just swapping" leads to warranty hassles for both a dealer and customer.

OP, I am GLAD your dealer is taking the RIGHT approach and with your patience you should become one of their top care customers .....Yes we do TRY to keep a non existent ;) priority list.....You work with us,we get you out quickly....You tell me I am an a$$...guess what...:hattip:

Service rep did indicate they had their device out to be refreshed recently and hadn't had any troubles since, but from the sounds of it, they hadn't done many with it.

Like I indicated, I work in the IT field and shit always happens at every level, not just hardware, but software as well. I can flash a PC and make it useless in about 5 minutes if I wanted too, so yeah it happens.

Seemed the issue was worse with more people in the truck, which I thought to be odd. However, I could get it to occur 100% by just turning left. No noise turning right. Service tech did here the noises turning left as well, but they are trying to do me a service and just replacing. My gut tells me this is more of a bushing issue than a spring. But that's just me.

Exactly, it shut off right in the middle of the update. Byebye ECM. I've never heard of this happening as well. I really do think it's a one off fluke.

Unless you already had 3 + 1 leaf pack with 6 clips like the recall ones are, they aren't doing you any special favor on those. Isn't a mileage or time thing, it is based off of the vin.

I have to wonder if he's buying time to see if he can get the springs in as well?? Versus going back and forth.

I'm not too worried about it as long as it's fixed correctly. I'd rather have good work vs sloppy rushed work any day any week. I also find if you rush em, it'll mark you as an a-hole and since there really aren't many Yota dealers around where I live (Closest would be about 1.5hrs away) Rather play nice than play nasty.

Good point, it is the 3+1 with 6 clips. I wonder if the dealer too has had past dealings with this particular issue. I just hope it's fixed.

i dunno about that, out of the 5 in my area, only one has proven half way competent. The others are freaking retarded... i literally had one dealer tell me (for the same ecu reflash the OP was having done) yeah.... dont come to us for that reflash, we messed up on two trucks last week and need a new ecu for both... i drove out of there as fast as i could.
