Saw something a couple of years ago that said that roughly 30% of the population in America has no idea how to drive a stick, and something like 10% don't know how to drive at all.

I fail to see what difference it makes. Is the truck maintaining speed?

And there's more of them out there, according the El Google.

Obviously these guys aren't typical, but it's still happening fairly regularly if this many stories about it are making the news. Makes you wonder how many thieves pass up a car completely when they look in through the window and see three pedals. :notsure:

I'm at 1500 at 60mph. It's great for gas, however i don't mind pressing a bit harder or shifting the gear manually.

It used to be manual trans could get the best mpg BECAUSE the driver could shift early and lug it in each gear!
I have an Uncle who was great at this . When I drove with him as a kid I always thought he was hurting his engines . He would upshift and I could hear it almost wanting to stall .He got great mpg though .
This is what the new autos seem to be wanting to do.

Nope...I've never had a vehicle with an automatic transmission act like that, and I've owned a variety of vehicles over the years.

To the OP, if you are coasting with no throttle, it's normal to have RPMs as low as 700-1000rpm. But if you have your foot on the gas even a little, it does not seem right that your transmission is choosing a gear that causes the RPM to drop to 1000 while under a load. That is too low. It doesn't sound like you are putting a big load on the engine at low RPMs so there's no need to worry too much. But putting a severe load on an engine at too low RPM can actually cause damage, that's why we've all heard "don't lug the engine" which is also stated in most owner's manuals. Diesels are pretty much designed to pull hard from low RPMS, but a typical gasoline engine is not.

This appears correct on paper: lower RPM means less air in, and less fuel burned, and better fuel economy... makes sense. But all engines have power/torque curves, and at different points on the curve, the engine efficiency will do better (or worse) at converting the fuel into mechanical energy. (This curve depends on many factors including the cam profile, compression ratio, intake/exhaust system flow, engine load, ignition advance curve, are the cylinders oversquare? etc.) So if the engine is turning 1000rpm, generally this is at a very low point in the power/torque curve and the engine will be less efficient at making power from the fuel being used. The engine will actually strain harder to pull the load, using more fuel to do the same work. Now, if the engine is turning 1500rpm, this is also at a low point in the power curve but a bit further into the curve and so the engine will more efficiently convert fuel into power... pulling more easily and more smoothly. Of course if we are focused only on fuel efficiency and not sheer power production, there is a point in the power curve beyond which fuel economy is thrown out the window.

I may not be explaining this right, but it is not fair to say that lower RPM equals better fuel economy. Better fuel economy depends on the engine's ability to efficiently convert fuel into power.

Which I'm sure Toyota's engineers took into account when they set up the transmission computer's shift map. If the engine's turning low RPM's in a high gear at a given speed on flat ground, there's probably a very good chance that it's because it's more efficient that way. :notsure:

I have not noticed this at all after my TSB. Like the OP, I still have a ridiculously slow throttle response. I don't mind it running 1K at 40mph, I just want something to happen if I need to punch it. Now, if I'm cruising at 25-40, nothing seems to happen if I give it gas until the peddle hits the floor, then the engine screams while it slowly gets moving. It's like I'm trying to accelerate in 6th throughout the travel of the peddle then it drops to 2nd and attempts to take off once it hits the floor.

This is also the case if I'm going around 10mph or so and I want to get moving, If I am not really aggressive with the peddle from the get-go, it will stay in the highest gear until I hit the floor.

He complains that the RPM is too low when cruising, he complains when ECT mode is engaged that the RPMs rev too high...

Anyone see a trend here? My gosh I'm getting sick of all the 3rd gen whiners, it's really starting to tick me off.

These new motors shift into Atkinson cycle at low load, and RPM. This allows folks to get low 20"s fuel economy numbers with mixed city and highway driving. Here in sunny Tucson AZ we have very few freeways and most driving is in 40-50 mph range. I have no issues with the trans in light traffic, less grannies going 5 under the limit to swerve around. In the afternoons in heavier traffic, pop it into S mode and choose your gear based on average speeds. 4th works well, popping up to 5th when traffic opens up.

If our trucks didn't do this people would complain about shitty mileage. 75 percent of the posters on this forum suffer from hyper vigilance syndrome and need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Okay, congratulations on being the first to be added to my ignore list.

Second, I own a 2nd Gen Tacoma. And at 35-45mph cruising speeds, my RPM is 1000-1200. These are normal driving characteristics for normal people. YES, YOUR TRUCK IS ACTING NORMAL. Perhaps if you used a little common sense, you would take the time to do some research and read about how your engine operates before you come and post about your adverse reaction to a NORMALLY operating Toyota simulated-atkinson-cycle vehicle.

Grow up, and have a pleasant day. Specifically in that order.:)

i guess i gotta get used to driving at 1k rpms all the time and be happy with it or sell/ trade in for a manual. having the gears change back and forth all the time when i dont even push the gas barely feels crazy to me.... My original post is not just to bitch.... but to find out if the new trans TSB adresses responsiveness at all . when the rpms rest at 1k in 6th gear basically there is no reponse.. ... but i guess everyones else auto drives in 1k too... surprised people dont mind driving in dog mode... THE off rode package in AC never come manual and i need the long bed and wanted the locking dif.

Put some 5.33 gears in. Should bring that rpm up
