Starting to think this is something we'll just have to deal with. Put aggressive tires on and we won't know if it's howling or not. Truck will look better too.:mudding:

Towing capacity and performance suffer however. Take your pick.

Interesting, I don't work in the auto industry. I work at a major aerospace company. We keep the same part number but rev it (but anyone that needs to know details of the part can see the current revision and have access to all revision history). Perhaps we will be able to tell differential changes based on toyota part #'s.

That's funny. I remember making that same point and somebody quickly coming in and telling me that I was wrong.

I know that the early 4.0's had faulty head gaskets. Toyota quietly redesigned the gasket part way through the 2005 model year and gave it a new part number. They never admitted to the first version being faulty, but yet the frequency of head gasket failures drastically diminished once they assigned a new part number to the gasket. Odd.

Honestly that may have been me saying I didn't believe that was true about part numbers hahaha. I responded with the maybe statement after someone else with Auto experience chimed in. I work in aerospace, not automotive, things may be different.

I have an OR with the GY Wranglers on it, not the Grand Trek. I guess the part that ticked me off the most is that if one of the two numbers were close to what the manufacturer recommended, I would be ok. But Toyota put 30 on the sticker for a reason, the tech decided to fill all 4 to 41 for some other reason, and then chose to write down 35 on the sheet. If I hadn't decided on a whim to flip the display over and see what the pressure reading was, I would have assumed all were around 35 based on the sheet and might have just left it there. Then I would have spent the next several weeks wondering why my truck was riding so rough after the transmission adjustment TSB reflash.

Dealership had my truck for a few hours this morning to check out the 2nd diff and do the transmission TSB. They agreed that the noise is still present, and contacted Toyota about how to proceed. Toyota told them to basically hold off on further repairs/diagnosis at this point. My service advisor also told me that he would be in touch when he hears something from Toyota on these diffs. He told me that he thinks we'll see "something" rolling out from Toyota related to the differentials and possibly the transmission based on all of the issues they've had.

I'll take this as good news. It seems like both the dealership and Toyota are now well aware of the issue, which is a step in the right direction, IMO. At no point did the word "normal" ever come up from the SA or corporate.

I updated my case with corporate, which has now been forwarded to a case manager, and I should be hearing from them on Monday.

On another note, initial reaction to transmission TSB is that it's a big improvement! If we can get the differential issues sorted out I will have no complaints with the truck!

I like this! If they would've told me exactly this last night, instead of "normal for now" I probably would've been a bit happier.

Agreed, I was happy with that response. I actually feel a little better about corporate telling them not to take any action for now, as it makes it seem like they are working on something instead of just throwing parts at it. I guess we just have to wait and see at this point.

I get the feeling the service manager at my dealership is in this same boat. I think he and his tech are aware of the differential issues and know that Toyota doesn't have a solid fix yet. So they put me off with the "it isn't loud enough to properly chase it down yet" while they wait for more info from Toyota about a fix.

Or at least that narrative fits what I want to happen...so I am going to run with it.

And I agree about the transmission TSB. Feels much better to me so far. And my mileage is up by about 1.5-2 mpg so far. Will see how it does over the course of a couple of tanks full of gas before I believe it is real...but it looks good so far.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, we are talking about Toyota dealerships after all. "Normal" may not be their favorite word, but it's definitely in the top 3!

For someone taking their truck in for the first time with this issue, it doesn't surprise me that they're saying its normal, as they did that to me the first time as well. That just seems to be the first step in this whole process, for whatever reason.

But for us guys on our second diffs, I just don't understand how they can come back and say the noise is normal now, after Toyota already replaced the first one because it was deemed to not be normal - such as in MasterPenguin's case. Fortunately I think more and more dealerships are starting to see this issue more often.

I'm optimistic that Toyota will come up with something, especially if folks keep getting the issue documented and reporting to corporate.

Money = Trouble. My guess is the fix will not be cheap or they're trying to conduct an AoA (analysis of alternatives) to find the cheapest method.

Time=Money. Faster they get a fix, the fewer diffs they have to repair!

Could be, depends on source of the problem.

From what I can tell looks like everything's the same for 2017 concerning rear diff and setup.

From what I have gathered, it sounds like Toyota is getting the diffs from a supplier. If the root of this is in the rear diffs, than some supplier could end up eating all of the cost, and not Toyota.

That'll be one fat REA coming from Toyota down to their subcontractor/critical supplier

But there are several factors in this situation as well. If Toyota did a shit job of designing and defining the parts of the diff on paper, then it wouldn't matter if the supplier built them or not. Never the less, non of this really matters to us hahaha. Like @aero90 I am also in the aerospace industry, and I find this situation rather intriguing
