Unanswered questions after lots of searching

I have been lurking through this forum for a while now and after I couldn't find answers to a couple questions I thought it was time a joined the community and asked for yalls help.

1. I am still learning this whole changing the gear ratio for bigger tires thing. First of all, I have found plenty of info on the gear ratio codes for 1st gen tacos but not for 2nd gen. Is there a thread somewhere with this information? Is it sufficient to change the gear ratio of the transfer case? seems this would be more economical/efficient than change both the front and rear diff ratios. I have 31" tires now and it already kind of sucks going up hills with stock ratios, when these tires are worn out I will want bigger tires and I need to figure out what gear ratios to use.

2. Does anybody have a picture of what the trail gear rock defense bumper looks like from the driver seat in a 2nd gen taco? I have found pics for the 1st gen, but since the 2nd gen is bigger I figured you probably see less of it. Would love to see what it looks like. If that stinger sticks out too much I'll probably just but the low profile and weld on my own hoop.

I am sure these questions have been answered, I apologize for asking them again, but I just couldn't find the answers in my searches.

For #1. Use this link to the tire size calculator and it shows you gear ratios at the bottom. https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc As an example, I run 315/75/16 with 4.88 gears and everything is about as close to stock as possible.

Thanks! that was really helpful, especially since the size you are running is exactly what I am thinking of switching to. So that other question in there... can this be achieved by changing the t-case ratio or do I have to do both diffs?

I am sure the laws of physics and math would allow this to be completed at the transfer case, but by design of the vehicle and aftermarket equipment availability, I have never heard of anyone changing gear ratios at the Transfer case because of different tire sizes.

Question is, do you really NEED the tires to accomplish something the truck doesn't do today, for a good bit of how you use it?

If the answer is yes, you have your solution, albeit not wallet friendly.

If the truck is capable 80% of the time as is, you obviously have more budget friendly options.

Women spend thousands of dollars on fake tits that are only cosmetic. Some men spend big sums on product, tanning, and gym memberships for cosmetic reasons only. City people wear western clothing and line dance and will never get near a horse. Some folks put fake tits, spray tans, and cowboy hats on their trucks. I don't get any of it but there it is.

 

This is everyday driver so I'm not wheeling often. But on occasion I hit the trails and would like to be well equipped for those days. The main reason I want bigger tires is for when I go hunting, I' often riding trails that swamp buggies go down and i have gotten stuck a few times because the wheel rutts get really deep thanks tothe buggies. Better clearance would do me some good. However the obvious easy solution is to buy my own swamp buggy...

 

Seems i can get the tires for around $1k and already assembled 3rd member and clamshell with 4.88 gears from east coast gear supply for around $1200...

 

The transfer case is 1:1 in high range so you can't change the gear ratio there. You could, theoretically, change the low range ratio but I have never heard of it being done.

Funny thing, i found pics of his truck through google which first made me interested in that bumper. But I had no idea who or what forum he was on. Awesome!

 

OP, you may have stated and I missed it. Do you have the 4 cylinder or V6? Im wondering because my tires are just under 32" and I dont notice much of a power drag, but I have a V6.

 

My bad, I had the ARB air locker added to the front when I priced it out...

 

I have the V6, and yea I checked the measurements and I also have 32". 90% of the time I don't notice it but I recently went on a fishing trip to the blue ridge mountains, and with 4 people in the car and about 400lbs of shit in the bed going up n down those hills I felt like she was struggling.

I have 2008 and you have 2013 TRD, do we have the same gear ratio?

 

Pretty sure the V6 autos have the same. The V6 6 speed manuals have a different ratio. Im not certain though that they've kept the ratios the same throughout the years.
