    been lurking for a bit.

drove a 2016 for the first time today. i used to have a 96 and have driven a couple 2015's.

i wasn't THAT impressed with the 2016 i drove today. i'm hoping it grows on me because i put money down and should be picking it up on saturday. for the money i just couldn't buy anything else that will (should?) hold it's value like a tacoma.

i'm in vancouver bc. i was going to buy a taco a couple years old - but they're almost as expensive as a new one. i couldn't see spending $35k (CAD) on a used car with 50K miles when i just bought a brand new one for $40k - with complete warranty. actually, i didn't even buy it. it made no sense to 'buy' it when the 39 month lease was 2.99% interest. i put a chunk of $$ down and have a $100/month payment.

the biggest problem was finding one! but, i persevered and on saturday will pick up an inferno TRD sport in 4 door.

i rent a LOT of cars so drive a lot of stuff (that's how i drove the 2014 or 2015's). my first impressions are:

*that tranny sure wants to upshift fast. damn, it was in top gear anytime i took my foot out of it for a moment.

    *all the shifting seemed 'buzzy'

*seemed to be searching for gears a bit

*brakes were ok - but not spectacular. i took it on a back road and 'locked er up' a couple of times. adequate - it is a truck after all. and i'm guessing that after a few miles (kms :) they'll get a bit more bite.

*stereo - i didn't really crank it - but it seemed 'ok'. even the low end econobox ford cars do better IMHO

*it had pretty good pick up off the line - as long as you stayed on the throttle. not going to be winning any drag races but it is a truck after all. :)

I'm hoping that I'm more impressed as time goes on. it's a damn good looking truck and i needed something 'smaller' because i do a lot of city driving. but needed a family adventure vehicle for camping, skiing, long cross country trips, etc. two kids and a 50# dog take up a lot of room!

i need to buy a cap. hoping to get one with a roof rack for the ski box etc. dog will get a bed in the bed as well.

i am deciding whether or not to get weather tech mats. dogs and kids make big messes - especially since we do a lot of beach time. might make clean up easier.

Also, deciding whether or not do do seat covers. i don't need leather (or pleather). i thought about wet okoles - but i heard they're not so good for dog hair. any other suggestions? No big deal with dog hair? I've seen a few that were made out of ballistic canvas - but they don't seem to fit nearly as well as the wet okoles. also, i hate being all sweaty so i'm a bit worried about 'swamp ass'. :)

i'm looking forward to putting some miles on the new toy. i think she's going to grow on me.

why would you put money down on a lease?
seems like a waste since you'll never get it back.

But on the note yes, I was at a dealer here in toronto and they tried to sell me on a used one with 60k wanted 36K for it. when a new one is 40k.
hope you end up enjoying it.

He wants a new tacoma, and noted the flaws. It's not like he has other options. 2016 or 2017.....everything else is used.

    good comments joe23

i think it was a good buy. i have a really low buy out at the end of the lease. it's a better deal than 'buying'. at the end of the lease i'll have a ton of equity - so, i am 'buying' even if it's a lease. i ran the numbers - didn't take a CPA to figure out the best way to keep (and put) $$ in my pocket.

i'm driving a brand new car for MUCH less than 1/2 of what i would have paid for a used car.

i think it's going to work out great for my needs.

just gotta get a cap - and figure out whether or not to get floor mats (probably) and seat covers (not sure).

Got the girl home today. So far - Me Likey!

Now I need to get a cap. I see all the threads. The dealer can get me a Leer XR (i think) with roof racks, pet screens, sliders for 3000 CAD.

Any other good ideas before i pull the trigger.

Gotta say - this is a DAMN good looking truck.

Love the looks of my truck. Just wish it had more guts and not so many issues. You're right it is a sexy truck. Reminds me of the dumb blonde cheerleader I dated back in college. Small mouth and big...well you know. But there was nothing going on inside!

Hopefully your third gen is trouble free! My sister bought a 2016 SR5 4x4 DCSB after I taught her about all of the warning signs on these trucks....she found a pretty good one I think. She really enjoys it. Of course she came from a 2002 Echo with 180k miles on it and mismatched hubcaps....but thats another story for another time. Her rear differential is howling however, that is the only issue that has popped up since she bought hers.

It seems to move along - ok. But, it is a truck. :) If I can do 80-85 on the freeway comfortably and merge into traffic without scaring myself - I'll drag race in something else. :)

Hope not too many issues. Will keep ya posted.

Really need to decide on a cap now...

I vote yes on the Weathertechs. My wife gave me a set for Christmas and well worth every penny, especially in the winter.

    None...yet!
So yes the tranny is a bit shifty, but that's the future. Wait until they start putting 8 and 10 gears in them... It's how you get 23MPG's out of a 6 cylinder... Not defending it, just the way it is.

Dog hair... shop vac? Just kidding. Our Yellow Lab has been booted to the back in here crate until we get a cap. On long trips when we need to take her, I will just know I need to vacuum for 3 hours when we get home.

Costco sometimes has these really nice sheepskin seat covers. I had them in my 2003 and will buy them as soon as I see them again. Like $55 USD per seat. And the dog hair didn't seem to stick too bad either.

    Floor mats are worth having.

It's a great truck, don't let a few complainers ruin it for you. (Ignore is your friend! :) )
