Help me choose between these 2 subs

Can't decide between these subs.

Boston Acoustics G110-4 ($93-109)

Or.......
Eclipse SW4000 (About $50-60)

Which sub and why? :hmm: These seem to be the best subs that will work with what I have available - 5.5" Mount Depth & .62 Air space. Im asking cause I dont have any experience with subs other then Kicker, Orion, JL Audio and Pioneer.
Going with the SVC's since its easier and cheaper to find a 400-500w amp in 2ohm rather then 1ohm.

I ran across this post a long time back, and they guy typically happens to be on the mark. Note that the post is kinda old, and things have changed.

It's worth mentioning that Eclipse has fluctuated - their early stuff was prone to failure, then they got into very simplistic high end material, and now they sold to some (Korean?) company that has them creating crap - mostly confusing GPS head units.

Boston has always been on the mark.

I'm still researching how deep and how much airspace I need to accommodate, so I have no help for that

 

ive decided to go with the bostons... but im just having a diliemma as far as finding an amp due to my limited space

 

Where are you wanting to mount the amp?

 

What box? I put my amp right behind the seat in the amp mounting space in the supercrew box..its tight but it works

 

Again I don't know what type of space I'm looking at yet, but I assume that if I could fit two 10"s with a small amp rack in the middle, I should be able to do, at the very worst, one 10" with space for two large amps (I'm carrying over my two amps from my old car).

If I was starting from scratch like you, I would have a good look at the space saving amps: JL HD series, Alpine PDX, or Memphis S class. There's probably others, but those are what I'm aware of so far.

 

I'll post up pics of my setup tonight. I have a dual 10 setup with a pair of small amps powering them. But I assure you that a pair of 10s with a single amp is very doable in that space. MrMarv built my box and it is awesome (as far as boxes go).

 

havent got a box yet... but im trying to find an amp to run my components and subs off of but may wind up going with 2 separate amps.

 

If it fits, you can get a 5 or six channel that run both doors and sub, such as a Memphis Belle, JL Slash 500/5, or Zapco (DC or non-DC) 650.6 to name a few. Note that they are BIG. I think the Belle is 19" long, Slash is 19.7", and the Zapco is 24.4".

 

i had a deal on a 5 channel, the mb quart pab 5400 to be exact, but it woudlnt fit in my truck anywhere unless it was laid out on the floor lol

 

I would deffinitely go with an Alpine PDX-5. They are rated at 75wattsx 4 and 300 watts x1. But any people say that they run like 100 watts x4 and 350x1. It also has a very small footprint. I really wanna get one. Ohh by the way good pick on the boston sub. Is it the one with the built in fuse? Great protection feature if this is the same series

No... just the G1 series. Im limited in airspace available and mount depth. Im going with the SX boston components, which are rated 65W RMS... i think 75 would be too much right?
For the pricetag the PDX5 has... I dont think I can bring myself to spend that type of money on a single amp, I may just go ahead and go dual amps.

 

75 watts wouldn't be too much, most speakers are underrated to keep people from over powering them. For instance I have a component set that is rated at 75 watts for the tweeter and midwoofer combined, yet many people including myself are giving them 75 watts for the tweeter and midwoofer seperately 150 watts total. Also unless you are a stickler for buying from an authorized dealer you can buy a pdx 5 on ebay from a trusted seller which I can reccomend that sells the pdx 5 for $358 shipped in the us and he sells them new in the box these aren't refurbs or used. I know a guy in California who buys from alpine wholesale and he says that they cost 299 so that is why internet retailers have them listed low because they know that people aren't going to pay $600 dollars for them.

Not really the case. Much like a fuse, a voice coil is rated at a power that a specific percentage can handle continuously. The power rating is a heat dissappation rating that is inturn based on a continuous power level being pushed through the VC. You can generally put more music signal power to a speaker than it is rated for because the music signal is not a constant power level, but rather rising and falling a lot.

I know this is kinda nitpicky. I just don't want people to be misinformed about electronics and the physics behind them, so I try to explain some of the things that I have learned over the years.

 

screw it, just going with 2 smaller separate amps to power everything and get the exact power i want rather then seesaw-ing with the power ratings.

picking up an eclipse 65x2 amp for the components... just searching around for a 400w mono amp for the subs, wired bass level remote would be nice.
