What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Fellow Utahn here, where abouts was this road/lake?

 

This was up in the Unitas it's way up in Murdock basin. Nice smaller reservoir up at the top. This is the worst i have seen this road in years the rocks are really sticking up out of the road as most of the dirt has washed away so its like basketball and larger sized rocks for 6 miles. If you don't air down and go slow it will break something It's just to rough to go any faster! My friend has a hummer with 40"s on it and he could go a little faster but not much. I think the rear diff gearing is shit and that's why it went. But what surprised me is it went on the freeway and not the trail. The stage 3 clutch doesn't help either but im not happy with the diff situation because this is why i geared the truck so this wouldn't happen and it makes the truck perfect for on and off road.

I didn't respond because i work 60 hrs a week and i just logged on! Oh and i don't go to malls my truck is to big to fit in parking garage! I may take my wife's corolla or the super bike but never the truck.

 

Pardon what's probably a played out question, but I'm looking for consensus on CV axles.

- 2.25-2.5" lift in front, Kings and AP UCAs
- 35s and 1" spacers
- 5.29s and ARB/E-locker
- not my daily driver
- wannabe expo rig, not intended to be a crawler, but it will see some locked driving if required
- looking for something quality, but I'd like to keep the CV as my 'fuse' due to relative ease of replacement in the field.

After looking around a bit, it looks like a parts store, no core, lifetime warranty CV might be the ticket. Still like to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

 

Sounds like you're on the right track with what to address.

I'd love to make it back to the Uintas at some point. I'll keep this in mind!

 

Sas is definitely the way to go on 37s. 99% of 9" lifted tacos dont actually go offroad. Definitely not an ideal setup.

 

Who said anything about 9in lifted?

 

Stay away from the parts store CVs for off-road use. Often times they will bind up way before OEM units and will cause problems. OEM is the only way to go.

Check out CVJ in Denver for remanufactured units, and you can get them with high angle boots. I've been happy with mine.

 

Pretty sure hes 6" db and 3" bl. The dreaded mall destroyer combo.

 

I do go offroad and want this more capable for expo\overland this is my camping truck. I bought the truck lifted to save 5k on it so it was my fault. but ill get it right for what i want it to do with it. I like driving over giant fallen trees and huge boulders to get to secluded primitive camping sites! It is 6" with 3" body and it's not my choice but the original owner. and im taking that crap off asap! I have always hated the ladder bar lift truss junk thing in the front. I actually just sold my 1991 dlx rock crawler i had it converted to chevy 3/4 ton axles dana 44s locked front and rear with a turbo 350 trans and a small block v8! It was bad-ass for wheeling! Man i miss that truck already.

Thanks, Brett. I'm glad I asked! I'll check out CVJ for sure.

Part of the reason I'm asking is because I want to start with 'new' CVs along with my new front diff and ARB. My existing ones are probably fine, but I'm thinking I can carry them for spares as long as I haven't f'd them up during the diff swap. Is it possible to pull apart a CV axle on accident?

 

Haha I was just messin. But its a blessing in disguise you ruined all that shit suspension, now you can replace it with some real shit!

 

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.

The inner joint can just pull apart, only real thing holding it is the boot. If you pull it apart to much, it takes a little effort to get it to pop back in. Does that help?

Also, you'll need to use OEM CVs as cores with CVJ, just pick up something at a yoda jims or something to use as a spare.

 

Hey guys anyone know a great write up over installing COs and dakars?

 

It's really not that hard, 4 bolts up front, 6 in the back, per side. Might help fight the COs if you take off the swaybar.

Hit the bolts with some pblaster or antiseize agent a day in advance. Then just unbolt them. I used a crowbar and bottlejack to align the eyelets for the bolts
