I recently bought a SR5 4x4 V6 DCSB and want to upgrade the suspension, wheels and tires. Coming from Jeep wranglers this is my first tacoma so I am completely clueless with tacoma suspensions upgrades

I was recently researching King & Icon suspension upgrades. First I want to say I will be do minor offroading, whether its going to a hidden fishing hole or driving on the beach, that all I mostly will be doing. Those coilovers/stage kits seem a little excessive, am I correct with that statement? Would anyone be able to give me a comparable setup for maybe less then $1200?

Lastly, I want to go to 275/75/17 with TRD pro wheels. I would like C load which if I have read correctly BFGs do not make. Is there any other manufacturers that are recommended?

Thank you for any help, this is a great community!

Agreed that the adjustable coilovers from the big 3 are a bit excessive for most of us. Talk to Marie at Headstrong Off road. You can get a Bilstein 5100/OME Coil setup for anywhere from $650-$1000 depending on the options you pick. I'm running that set up and really love it.

Id go with Bilstein 5100s all around or for better option a little more expensive ....Bilstein 6112s up front and 5160s in rear. Tires maybe a tight fit. Duratracs or K02 would be my choice based on past experiences

Well...Icon and King are both amazing suspension setups, arguably some of the best money can buy. But if you aren't into doing any heavy off-roading then it'd be overkill for your needs, I'd say. But at the end of the day it's your money and your truck!

Bilstein 5100s combined with Old Man Emu coils and add-a-leafs (AALs) in the rear are by far the most popular, inexpensive quality lift option that people around here go with. Usually when you start getting into heavy off-roading scenarios where you are looking for more travel and the ability to move real fast over rough terrain is where people start looking into King and Icon kits.

5100s are adjustable for height, but if you get OME coils then it's best to keep the 5100s at 0" and let the coils do the lifting.

I got about 2" of lift by running 5100s all around, OME 881s in the front and Headstrong Offroad's 3 leaf AAL pack in the rear. Closer to 3" in the rear actually. All for under $900 (not including install). King and Icon setups are going run in the $3k+ range

    Thank you for the replies!

This sounds like the setup I am looking for. Question how tough is the installatoin. I installed my own suspensions on jeeps but I imagine this is a different beast.

Would the extra lift help clear 274/75/17's?

You'd probably want 275/70r17, but yes, it would help clear. Maybe only minor rubbing.

Install is a breeze. You can order them disassembled and follow this method. I used it and it was mega easy. There's a part 2 as well

Someone else will have to chime in on the tire size question, I'm still running my stock size tires on this setup until it's time for new ones.

I had a shop do the installation for me for $350, best price I could find. Most places wanted $500 or more. But I know several people on here that have done the 5100 install themselves, and they all said it was simple enough if only a little time consuming. If you plan on doing it yourself, then I'd definitely order the shocks/coils pre-assembled from the vendor. @HeadStrong Off-Road offers this for an extra $100 I think it was. Otherwise you'll have to find a shop to do it for you since it requires compressing the springs.

edit: or just do what @EatSleepTacos posted in the video above and save the extra $$ haha

Toytec Boss Lift. I run it and love it. All in one kit. Everything you need to have it done right. I run 285 75 16 and don't rub, no squeaks, no vibrations, nothing....

887 ome springs with ome or bilstein struts/shocks for a cheap but very capable setup..

You could even add some ucas and still be under $1200

Wonder how quality (both ride and components) of the Toytec lift stacks up against something like Bilstein 6112 coilovers and 5160s in rear with new leaf pack

    Go with your budget,
and what suits you, these are all good recommendations, if I had the cash I would would have Kings and TC UCA's, Dakar's in the back or Expedition style,
when it comes to Fox or Icon think it comes down to digressive vs progressive valving,
budget think Bilstein, these are viable and proven but to still questionable on the 16's however there is more meat on the bone so to speak to backup Bilsteins fit today with the right spring rate combo...
unsure? OME is always a good bet, priced right with optional Dakar's....and you still have several other choices to consider ADS, Pro-comp, Toytec...

Check all the threads on lifts and reviews...one does not fit all in this arena, but they will all work...Again of you want someone on the to talk to Marie at HS comes highly recommended, and even I can back that up...she will give you the time...

    you choice bud.

I think I'm going to go the Bilstein shocks, OME spring, route for now. I can always upgrade from there.

How much of a lift does that setup give you?

The Bilstein and OME lift? Depends on which OME coils you go with. Remember, it's always better for ride quality and overall life of the shocks if you keep them set to 0" and let the coils achieve your lift. I have the OME 881s and I get about an inch and a half of lift in the front.

880s are < 1" lift, 883's-887's I think are 2"-2.5" of lift....it all depends on your truck and how much weight you have in the front end too. If you look on Headstrong Offload's website it'll help tell you how much lift to expect based on which coils you're getting. Generally the higher up in the OME coils you go, the heavier the weight rating on them is and they will ride rough if you don't have much weight on them in the front (armor, winch, v6 versus 4cyl, etc.).

I'm not terribly familiar with some of the OME coils though so be sure to check out the specs on the ones you're considering to make sure they'll work well with your truck.

I kind of regret going with 881s since my back end got lifted closer to 3" with the 3leaf aals, so I've got a 2" rake. I like some rake but I think I might go against my own advice and set the front 5100s to .85" to reduce the rake some. In hindsight I should've gone with 885 coils

Would putting OME springs on the stock TRDOR bilsteins be worth a bird in the bush?
