So its been a while since I have had a manual, my last two vehicles were full sized autos. once a year I pull my mother in laws boat out of the lake (its a beefy tahoe wakeboard boat). I just got back from pulling it out and did it in 4Hi. It was a steep enough landing that I rode the clutch more than I should have (it definitely doesn't smell good now). I am wondering if any other boat owners have an opinion on 4hi vs lo. Looking back I think I should have just used Lo.

also, since it's been a while I just want to verify that the one time clutch riding probably didn't do too much damage. they are built tougher than that, right?

    Thanks!

Bigger issue is if you glazed the flywheel.

If everything feels/drives just the same tomorrow, you probably just took off a couple thousand miles of clutch material.

Smitty is a trouble maker. Oh wait, that was another thread. Smittys right, clutches are made to wear out, but instead of burning your clutch, put it in 4 low. Clutch replacement might not be covered under warranty if they can tell that it's been ubused and is very expensive to get replaced.

Pull mine out every other weekend to clean in 4-wheel high. Also a wake boarding boat but it sounds like your incline is a lot steeper. So far no issues at all here.

That was directed at thatcarolinaboy, he didn't say in his post. Can't assume.

What I do on steep inclines is pull out the E brake, start to release clutch/give gas and as soon as you feel it engage, release the e brake. Prevents you from rolling backwards. I would still be in 4 lo though, because that reduction in gearing is NICE. Just keep it in a straight line or you can damage 4wd components. Same goes for 4hi

Im still on the fence on Smitty. Just kidding, he can stay. If he isn't here, who else is going to keep things interesting?

OP said he "rode the clutch". That's an MT, not an auto tranny.

I got the manual transmission from ops post, but in the post by thatcarolinaboy he didn't state what transmission he has.

I'm not sure exactly. It's not my boat. But I took the truck out for a test drive after about an hour of sitting and all seems fine. 4lo from now on!

Only use 4lo on the ramp. Don't drive around with it in low range and towing. On the road that is

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't using the "clutch start cancel" work well in the Ops situation?
