If I am towing a trailer OD is always off and ECT is in power mode. However it feels like I am abusing the truck running it at 3K RPM on the highway for extended time, I know its better this way just feels like I am doing something bad lol.

I drive with the ECT on all of the time. Is that ok?

I don't think it is bad but you may use more fuel this way. It waits to shift longer with ECT I think.

My V6 can pull my trailer in OD on level highway. For long stretches of flat highway, I use OD to realize efficiencies normally associated with OD. OD comes off whenever the road climbs. Temps are monitored with a scan gauge.

I thought I would share this with the class... Ordered up a Transmission Cooler (B&M 70264) from Advance Auto Parts. I signed up for their newsletter and got sent a 40% off coupon for $100 purchase. I was a few bones short of $100 total, so I added tools to eclipse the mark in order to cash in on the savings. For others who are looking for ample savings, I would suggest going this route as the Transmission Cooler only ended up costing me $57.73!Screen Shot 2016-10-14 at 10.41.56 AM.jpg

On the ECT/OD subject, I've been towing with OD and ECT off. I can't remember where I read it, but I think I saw that OD off and ECT on keeps the torque converter from locking up. With only OD off, the shifts are a bit longer and the TC usually locks around 50 mph. During normal driving with OD on, or towing with OD off, I note an almost immediate trans temp drop after TC lockup. Usually around 10°F drop.

Just put the finishing touch on my install today, after having the cooler in service for 2 months: the second horn!

Randomly, I searched for something like "Toyota horn wire" and got this:

not on my 3rd gen truck, but i know my 3rd gen 4runner sees lower temps when OD is off. i have a after market cooler, and when its 100 degrees outside, the trans temp will reach about 230. My trans cooler fan turns on at 190, and i am thinking of either adding another cooler, or letting it flow through the one in the radiator.

I installed the B&M Supercooler last year for some towing. Love it, but I did have to do some fancy arranging and ended up losing 1 horn as well. I'm also running the filter that was recommended.

I have a manual trans so this is academic for me, but you could install a set of high-temp ball valves and tee fittings to easily bypass the aux trans cooler for the winter, or enable the aux cooler when towing. Of course this could be disastrous if someone didn't know what the valves were for. Recommend labeling them clearly.
