Lubrication for a semi auto handgun?

I have recently got into semi-auto handguns and I am debating on what is the best lubrication. I currently have 4 Sigs and I am trying to find the best method of lubrication. I have heard some people say that you have to use grease on the slides and the rails. I have heard some people say that a good gun oil works sufficiently as long as you use the proper amounts of lube. I have heard that grease can be to thick and can cause FTFs at the range. I have also heard that oil doesn't protect the slide and rails enough which will increase wear. I would like to know if you use grease or oil and what brand. I was just curious as to what some TW members use for lubrication on semi-auto handguns and why?

 

I use rem oil for all lubrication, never used grease. Wear is going to happen regardless of what you use, I wouldn't use any grease or anything like that unless I was storing the weapon for a long period of time. And always follow the rule that if your in a high humidity/mosture area use heavier lube and for dry/sandy areas use a light coat of lube. Hope it helps.

 

rem oil is really good, but you dont wanna spray a ton of it. just a few light coats and wipe out the excess.

 

With Sigs "Break Free" works the best as a lubricant... Comes in a black bottle you can shake it up and clean and lubricate with it! Pretty awesome stuff... A little goes a long way...

I've never heard of Hoppe's 9, but I use Hoppe's solvent.

EDIT: The Hoppe's solvent I use is infact #9

 

Ahh the internet. Everybody is a freaking know it all.
Hoppe's 9 is a solvent, NOT A LUBRICANT!!!!!!
Works great cleaning stuff but has ZERO lubricating value.


I recommend CLP / Break Free.

Breakfree and CLP, both outstanding.
Really any of the lubricants for firearms are fine, kind of like engine oils, use a name brand.
I use Breakfree and CLP for cleaning and Rem oil for lubing. After I run an oil patch down a barrel I make one pass with a new clean patch. When I oil the rails on the slide, I wipe it one time with a clean patch. I clean and oil my firearms after every range session, every time. I ran 20,000 rounds through my Browning Hipower and when I sold it they rated it at 95%. Quality firearm with quality care, only misfire I recall was a broken sear pin.

 

Good ol' hoppes oil.

 

Any quality firearm lubricant will work fine as long as you follow the recommended lube points and amounts for the firearm. I would certainly avoid using any type of automotive grease or anything else not designed for firearms. Especially if using any type of polymer frames or bushings in the firearm as they may not be compatible. Just my .02

 

Break Free is known to be good for guns.

 

Get some CLP and call it a day.

 

"Break Free" is enough for me. I spray down my Springfield XD and scrub slide, use patches and wipe away excess. It's all I use. Then use silicone cloth to wipe entire surface when put back together. First time I cleaned my pistol I had lubricant coming out all over the place. I learned it doesn't take much.
