You've just proven my point. Oil should be chosen based on environmental conditions. Not what Toyota says.

Again, not sure if you are talking to me, but I'll assume yes, and that you have issue mastering the quote feature.

I don't have a '16. I use what my vehicles calls for, except for choosing synthetic over dino, to extend OCIs safely.

You might enjoy some reading over at bobistheoilguy.com. But probably not.

Has anyone at your work ever commented about your 'but we've always done it this way' frame of mind? :p

There, I quoted you. Are you happy now. If there was a lower viscosity oil readily available Toyota would have gone with that to get their numbers up. This is not rocket science. I've done my oil research and bob is not the only oil guy. Common sense is not very common now days.

My truck currently has 5w20 Kendall synthetic in it. Made NO difference in fuel economy. Made NO difference in the way it performs.

You should go to (bobistheoilguy web site). Everybody has a theory what to use and not use. That being said it is a cool web site.

    None...yet!
I was suspicious of the 0w20 stuff too... Coming from 1960's straight 6's that ran 500,000+ miles with 10w40 it seemed to me that thicker was always better. (And in the 1960's it probably was!) But after reading this:

    http://bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/

I will run the 0w20 Mobile 1 and not worry about it. I am even going to extend the oil and filter changes to 5,000 mile intervals.

    But the choice is yours.

There isn't anything from the 60's that went 500k.

The part people forget is that engines use oil. Some use more than others. Think it's VW, that's acceptable to burn a quart per 1000 miles. So on that 10k mile oil changes, it would be acceptable to basically change it twice by adding 10qts of oil as it burns it

That was just an example. Most manufacturers spec a quart per 1000-2500 miles. Although 99% of them never use that much.

Another oil thread. So the 3rd Gen engine has higher build tolerances than the 2nd Gen engine? Your telling me they changed the engine that much in this thread and in other threads you are telling me they are still using the 2nd gen leafs.

It's not my rig so put whatever you want in it, if you don't want to listen to what the manual states. Take some of the oil you have in it now and send it off to the lab. Then with the 5w-20, at that oil change interval send it into the lab.

    ____
    I am not a 3rd gen but I run 5w-20 fine.

Thx for sharing the link, some good reading there! I enjoyed being schooled a bit on what I thought I knew about oil.

I would be happier using 5W20 regular or semi-synthetic oil than full synthetic 0W20 as is cheaper and I prefer to change my oil at 5mo/5k intervals, because of condensation and sludge build up.
But Toyota is not giving much leeway or guidance for some reason, so I’ll do mine every 6mo/7-8k as per manual pg 571.

    Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 7.49.36 PM.jpg

And the only real reason I see in difference over the previous 4.0L is the following “The Variable Valve Timing-intelligent Wide (VVT-iW) system is used. This system is operated by the
    engine oil.”

    Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 7.52.24 PM.jpg

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

They are only so stringent because they have CAFE standards to meet.

Don't over-think it, we're not driving vehicles with high performance engines...hence the lead-way mentioned above.

Yeah, but you don’t get that much better mileage with 0W20 vs 5W20 that I can measure, but I guess a 10th must be a big deal, or so I’ve heard.

But I also think they all seem to be competing for that cost of ownership maintenance expense and they’ve done away with lot of other things like pcv valve changes, longer filter life and such. That seems to be a big deal also and maybe oil is a victim of that too?
IDK I wish I knew more though so I could decide without worries…
