Bed length questions

I realize that the beds are different between the Xtra cab and Crew cab versions of the Tacoma, but how much shorter is the crew cab version?

Is it still long enough to mount a couple mtn bikes (lengthwise) and close the tail?

Granted, different size bikes may have an impact, but in general is anyone doing it?

Crew cab comes standard with a 4' short bed or it can have the optional 6' long bed. The regular & access cab has a standard 6' bed. Sounds confusing because they call a 6' bed either standard or long. All depends on the cab size.

 

I have a double cab and I cannot get my sons mtn bike in the bed without turning it sideways or leaving the tailgate open, same with the motorcycles.

Hmm, thats what I was afraid of.
I found a god deal on a 01 Crew cab, that has a shell already.
In a perfect world I could mount my bikes in the bad and close it all up...doesn't look like its gonna happen that way.

 

Get a bed extender? Any reason you HAVe to close it up.

 

Crew cabs are 5 feet I thought. Anyway, OP, if you take the front wheel off I'm willing to bet that you'll be able to fit the bike in the bed and be able to put the tailgate up. Theres a lot of people with first gen crew cabs, hopefully they'll be able to answer your question with something better than a guess.

 

Yes, the front wheel would be removed and a mount used to secure the bikes.

I don't absolutely have to close it up, but I would prefer too. Regardless of which one I get, I will have a shell. Being able to close it all up would just make me very happy.

I stand corrected........the bed length for the short bed on a crew cab is 60.3 inches. Just a hair longer than 5 feet.

 

If you have a shell does it go higher than the factory Roof line?

if not then your bikes will not go in standing up no matter how long the bed is.
In all the pictures posted the handle bars are higher then the roof....

 

you guys are forgetting he is posting in 1st gen forums.... there is no such thing as double cab long bed in these years.... which sucks cause frontiers offered it... if you want double cab and long bed you are stuck with the larger,gas hogging,ugly 2nd gens.. (well IMO anyhow LOL)

 

Notice where everyone has their front wheel mounts though. If you put them on the bed floor, with a little spacer then that drops the bars way down and allows the topper to fit. Did that on my 88 and 93, no issues. Was just wondering about the dbl cab length.

 

Doublecab 1st-gen IS 5'1". With bed extender, 6'2"! Plenty of room, and that extender (I have one but now I cant use it with the shell) is just as sturdy and containing as the tailgate. I've seen some guys leave it permanently in extended position. There are NO 4 foot beds on any Tacoma. You may be thinking of Nissan or Ford Sport trac.
