Greeting everyone. Am new to the site and still do not own a Tacoma. I am looking into a new one. Can anyone tell me if the SR or SR5 packages can be optioned with a rear locker? I am on a budget but would like a few options. Any info would be great.

Unfortunately no, you need a TRD Offroad. That was the nice thing about the FJ cruisers, you could just check a box and get the e-locker as a stand alone option.

As far as I know, only the TRD Off Road comes with a locker and is the only one available with it. That being said, there are aftermarket options. I'm sure someone will chime in with a few.

Off Road is the only one with a mechanical locker. It also has an electric pump for the brake booster. It has crawl control and MTS if you get the automatic.

All other models have vacuum boosted brakes and various forms of weaker traction and stability control

Go to the Toyota website and try and build one.. I think the locker only comes with the OR/PRO/Deluxe (or whatever that one is called) - all the big $$ ones. You can get 8.75 big rear end in the TRD Sport with manual tranny but no e-locker.... Why are you obsessing on the e-locker? Have you ever used one or drove a truck with a locking rear diff off road? They can actually get you into MORE trouble depending on where you are off road. So mixed bag ... after a while you won't probably ever use it.

I disagree a bit with the comment above. If you want a rear locker its best to get the e-locker and be done with it. Having used it in the past on other Toyotas, its nice to know its there when you need it.

Thanks. That's what I thought. The last vehicle I wheeled with had open diffs and I'd really like a locker. I know there are quite a few aftermarket lockers. But have one already equipped from the factory would be nice.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Auto LSD is in the other options as well and will get you wherever you need to get. If you are going to spend money locking, then lock the front diff and leave limited slip in the rear. Pulling yourself over something is the most difficult and important part. Once the front wheels are over the back will follow without any locker.

I think you could get an optional locker with the '16 TRD sport, idk about the '17. You could go aftermarket on an SR or SR5. But the SR5 has TRAC and LSD which is pretty good for most needs, so I'd go that route and add the locker if it need be.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Limited models do not have a locker. ARB makes good lockers that will last much longer than a factory one.

So you are advising him to go an aftermarket route, which involves multiple points of failure, to
Totally dependent on a host of factors. Was the locker installed correctly? Will the air lines ever kink or leak? Now you have to buy and maintain an air compressor. Its just a solution looking for a problem IMO. The factory e-lockers are reliable, I have not heard of people having problems with them.

Auto LSD is vacuum boosted on all models but OR and PRO. That doesn't work well at very slow speeds, especially with the torque at the wheels in 4lo.

When you say limited slip in the rear, there is no mechanical LSD on any model.

These aren't solid axle jeeps. Having a front locker in a front engine IFS vehicle isn't too safe with all the weight and constant 2 wheels down. This is why Toyota doesn't offer a front locker on anything
The sport did not have an optional locker

I am sure that is Toyota's main reason for not offering a front locker. We are just providing advice to the guy. Toyota used to offer mechanical LSD up until 2009. There are many unsafe things spoken about and conducted on a daily basis here, installing a front locker in an IFS is quite a stretch to be considered one of them.

Have fun OP, no matter what crap you slap together here from the forum, if you are looking to get stuck or be challenged then eventually you will be regardless of equipment. If you want to wander and not get into trouble then a class on off-road driving techniques will suit you better than piece of equipment.
